The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of three alarming incidents—an alleged case of ragging at Tripura Medical College, a woman’s reported forced public nudity, and a case involving unlawful interference in the private lives of two adults.
Following a report in a local newspaper, THRC directed the Principal of Tripura Medical College, Hapania, to submit a detailed account of the ragging incident within three weeks. An independent investigation was also ordered by the District Magistrate of West Tripura and the Superintendent of Police, who must submit their findings in the same timeframe. The Commission, led by Justice S.C. Das, stressed the importance of upholding anti-ragging laws to prevent future incidents, noting that such violations of students’ rights carry severe human rights implications.
In response to a second incident involving a woman allegedly paraded naked, the THRC described the act as a blatant breach of fundamental human rights. Shocked that such an event could occur in a state committed to the rule of law, the Commission instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura to conduct a thorough investigation and provide a comprehensive report within three weeks.
In a third order issued on October 30, the THRC responded to reports of local leaders unlawfully interfering in the private lives of two consenting adults. According to reports, despite bringing the issue to the police, the police response was reportedly inadequate. The THRC has requested the DGP to submit an investigative report within two weeks on the incident.
Justice Das underscored the Commission’s commitment to human rights and highlighted previous interventions, including a 2022 case at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Udaipur, where the THRC had issued anti-ragging recommendations. Through these recent directives, the THRC aims to reinforce accountability among authorities and ensure justice for the victims of these incidents.
