Tripura hosts a major AI awareness workshop in Agartala ahead of the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, highlighting AI applications, India-AI Mission initiatives, youth skill development, and the state’s expanding role in India’s digital and technological transformation.

Tripura emerged as a key participant in India’s rapidly evolving artificial intelligence ecosystem on Friday as the Directorate of Information Technology organised a regional AI awareness workshop in Agartala. The event, held at Pragya Bhavan, was part of the nationwide outreach programme for the upcoming India-AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled to take place in New Delhi next month.

The workshop was inaugurated by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha in the presence of senior government officials, including IT Secretary Kiran Gitte and Director (In-Charge) of the IT Department, Suprakash Jamatia. Nearly 350 participants attended the programme, reflecting strong interest from academia, government institutions, and the technology sector. Students and faculty members from premier institutions such as NIT Agartala, National Law University Tripura, IIIT, and the National Forensic Sciences University actively participated in the sessions.

Experts from diverse domains addressed the gathering, focusing on the real-world applications of artificial intelligence. Dr. Suman Deb of NIT Agartala discussed AI-driven solutions in governance and public service delivery, while Dr. Tanmoy Bhowmik of Paytm highlighted the role of AI in fintech innovation and digital inclusion. Prof. Nachiketa Mittal from NLU Tripura elaborated on the legal and ethical challenges associated with emerging AI technologies, stressing the importance of responsible deployment.

A central theme of the workshop was the India-AI Mission, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology with an investment exceeding Rs 10,300 crore. The mission aims to strengthen India’s AI infrastructure by establishing AI laboratories in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, expanding high-performance computing facilities through public-private partnerships, and promoting indigenous AI models, particularly in Indian languages. Financial and mentorship support for student-led AI startups also forms a key component of the initiative.

Tripura is poised to benefit significantly from these developments, with plans underway to establish AI labs in local educational institutions. These facilities are expected to provide hands-on training, foster innovation, and equip students with future-ready digital skills. Addressing the gathering, Chief Secretary Sinha said the initiative would empower young minds and ensure that technological progress reaches grassroots levels, contributing to inclusive regional development.
