ILS Hospital in Agartala has suspended all medical services for Bangladeshi patients following a protest against the alleged insult of the Indian national flag in Bangladesh. The decision, announced on Saturday, comes after mounting pressure from local residents who demonstrated outside the hospital.
Gautam Hazarika, a representative of ILS Hospital, assured protesters that Bangladeshi citizens would no longer receive treatment at the facility. He added that Bangladeshi patients had already stopped arriving at the hospital days before the announcement. Additionally, the help desk dedicated to assisting Bangladeshi patients was shut down on Saturday.
Tripura has been a crucial medical hub for patients from neighboring Bangladesh, with many relying on its healthcare services. However, the protesters, citing national pride, demanded an immediate cessation of these services. “This protest reflects our deep respect for the Indian flag and our national identity,” one of the demonstrators said.
The prolonged agitation disrupted hospital operations, causing inconvenience to local patients and their caregivers. The move to halt services underscores the tension between regional sentiments and the ethical obligation to provide medical care, raising concerns about the future of cross-border humanitarian cooperation.
