Tripura Minister Kishor Barman highlights the state’s water conservation, rainwater harvesting and sustainable water management initiatives at the Departmental Summit on Water in New Delhi, reaffirming Tripura’s commitment to safe drinking water and a water-secure future.
Tripura has highlighted its commitment to water conservation, safe drinking water and sustainable management of water resources at the national level, with Minister of Higher Education, Panchayat & General Administration (Political) Kishor Barman representing the state at the two-day Departmental Summit on Water organised by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti at Sushma Swaraj Bhavan in New Delhi.
The important national summit, chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil, brought together ministers, secretaries and senior officials from the Centre and different states to discuss key challenges and strategies related to water conservation, water security and sustainable management of water resources.
During the summit, participating states shared their experiences, achievements and ongoing initiatives aimed at addressing growing water-related challenges. Discussions focused on strengthening water conservation measures, improving drinking water availability, promoting rainwater harvesting, protecting water resources and ensuring their sustainable use for future generations.
Minister Kishor Barman presented Tripura’s approach towards water management and outlined various initiatives undertaken by the state government for conservation and efficient utilisation of water resources. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring access to safe and reliable drinking water for citizens across the state.
On the second day of the summit, Barman presented Tripura’s initiatives as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Catch the Rain” campaign. The state showcased measures undertaken to conserve water, capture rainwater and improve the management of available water resources.
The minister emphasised that effective water conservation requires sustained efforts at both the government and community levels. He underlined the importance of preserving every possible source of water and encouraging people to actively participate in conservation activities.
Barman also stressed that ensuring drinking water security is not only a matter of expanding infrastructure but also of maintaining the long-term sustainability of water sources. According to him, responsible management of water resources is essential to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the requirements of future generations.
The summit provided an opportunity for Tripura to learn from successful practices adopted by other states and explore ways to incorporate suitable approaches into its own water management framework. Delegates also exchanged views on innovative conservation methods, community participation and the use of technology for improving water management.
The discussions further highlighted the importance of coordinated action between the Centre, state governments, local administrations and communities in tackling emerging water security challenges. With changing weather patterns, increasing demand and pressure on natural resources, sustainable water management has emerged as a critical priority for long-term development.
Barman reiterated Tripura’s commitment to strengthening its water conservation efforts and expanding access to safe drinking water. He said that water security must remain a collective priority and that conserving water today is essential for securing the future.
The minister also linked Tripura’s initiatives with the broader national vision of building a water-secure India, with campaigns such as “Catch the Rain” encouraging citizens and institutions to focus on harvesting and conserving rainwater.
The state’s participation at the Delhi summit provided a platform to showcase its water management vision while strengthening dialogue with policymakers and officials from across the country.
