Tripura High Court asked the State Election Commission to complete the Village Committee Election by November this year.
The High Court order following a petition by the TIPRA Motha that alleged that state government was reluctant to hold the Village Committee polls in the state.
The regional party contended that since the Village Committees expired in Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and the ruling govt had not conducted polls there were problems in getting the funds for development works.
Advocate and TIPRA Motha leader Antony Debbarma told media that State Election Department and State Government’s intentions were obviously against holding the Village Committee elections and they placed ensuing Durga Puja festival as an excuse for the delay ”.
“But we pointed out that if the festival was an issue, how by-polls were conducted”?, said Debbarma.
The High Court after hearing us all instructed the Election Dept to conduct the village committee election by November this year, said Antony Debbarma.
Debbarma added though it is too late as the assembly election is also ensuing, still, the ADC administration and Tipra Motha welcomed the verdict.
In the meantime in yet another verdict the High Court on Tuesday found the writ petition filed against the Advocate General Siddhartha Shankar Dey’s rights as a voter in the Bar Council elections as ‘not maintainable’. The CPIM affiliated lawyers had earlier filed the writ petition challenged Advocate General’s right to vote in the Bar Council election of the Tripura High Court.
Briefing the judgment of the High Court on Tuesday advocate Shankar Lodh told reporters that the HC under the single bench of Amarnath Goud observed that the Advocate General had owned his membership before the formation of Bar Council of Tripura and termed the writ petition as not maintainable to reject the writ petition.
Lodh, who appeared for the Advocate General during the hearing of the writ petition said that the Advocate General Siddhartha Shankar Dey owned the membership of High Court of Bar Association during the year of 2012.
