On Tuesday, the Tripura government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Digital India BHASHINI, part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. This collaboration aims to enhance Tripura’s multilingual capabilities, streamline governance, and ensure more inclusive and efficient public services for all citizens.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at Pragna Bhavan during a state-level workshop titled “Bhashini Rajyam,” inaugurated by Finance and IT Minister Pranajit Singha Roy. Prominent attendees included Secretary IT Department Kiran Gitte, Amitabh Nag, CEO of DIBD, MeitY, and Jeya Ragul Geshan B, Director IT, Government of Tripura.

Bhashini, a revolutionary initiative under Digital India, promotes seamless communication and internet accessibility in 22 different languages, aiming to bridge digital and literacy divides for all citizens. Tripura is the first north-eastern state, the first in eastern India, and the eighth state in the country to sign an MoU with Bhashini, underscoring its commitment to digital inclusivity and enhanced citizen-centric governance.

The integration of Bhashini into Tripura’s e-Governance software will bridge the digital divide, provide cost-effective translations, promote inclusive policy implementation, and enhance regional identity. Supported by the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) of MeitY, this initiative will empower citizens by eliminating language barriers and enabling multilingual access to essential services.

The workshop highlighted Bhashini’s vision for digital inclusivity, demonstrating its software capabilities such as real-time translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and voice-to-voice translation between Indian Regional Languages and English. The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in achieving high accuracy translations was emphasized, along with the responsibilities of the state and DIBD in the mission.

Discussions also focused on strategies to promote regional languages on digital platforms and software applications for the Government of Tripura, aiming to reduce the digital divide and increase inclusivity for diverse linguistic communities in the state. Many citizens of Tripura, particularly in rural and tribal areas, currently face challenges due to language barriers with software systems in English or Hindi.

Bhashini promises to be a game-changer by integrating with existing systems like the CM Helpline, eVidhan, Kisan Sahayata App, and e-Districts to enable multilingual communication. This integration will enhance local governance through apps like “Amar Sarkar” and improve education with multilingual technologies.

Furthermore, Bhashini will support the CCTNS Platform by translating FIRs and enabling voice-based data entry, thus bridging the digital divide by easing access to the internet in the regional and local languages of Tripura. Implementing Bhashini will unify Tripura’s linguistic diversity, fostering a more inclusive and connected society.
