Tripura has been ranked among aspiring leaders in the DPIIT Startup Ecosystem Ranking, highlighting its growing efforts to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation alongside other North-Eastern states in India’s expanding startup landscape.

Tripura has secured a notable position in India’s startup development landscape by being ranked among the ‘aspiring leaders’ in the latest Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) State and Union Territory Startup Ranking. The recognition highlights the state’s growing efforts to build a supportive ecosystem for entrepreneurship and innovation.

According to the rankings released on Friday, Tripura is one of four states from the North-Eastern region to qualify in the ‘aspiring leaders’ category. The other North-Eastern states in this group are Assam, Mizoram, and Sikkim, reflecting a broader regional push toward startup-led economic growth.

The DPIIT ranking is an annual assessment that evaluates the performance of states and Union Territories in creating policies, infrastructure, and institutional support systems that encourage startups. In the latest exercise, 34 states and Union Territories participated, showcasing initiatives aimed at nurturing entrepreneurship, promoting innovation, and enabling job creation.

At the national level, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, and Goa were declared ‘best performers’ in developing a robust startup ecosystem. Gujarat, in particular, has retained its top position for the fifth consecutive year, underlining its consistent policy support and strong industrial base. Meanwhile, Karnataka, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh were placed in the ‘top performers’ category, reflecting sustained progress in startup funding, mentorship, and ease of doing business.

Several other states have been recognised as ‘leaders’, including Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. These states have demonstrated strong governance mechanisms and effective implementation of startup-focused initiatives.

Tripura’s inclusion in the ‘aspiring leaders’ category signals steady improvement and potential for growth. The state has been working to strengthen its startup ecosystem through policy reforms, incubation support, and improved access to resources for young entrepreneurs. While it still has ground to cover to match top-performing states, the ranking reflects a positive trajectory and growing institutional commitment.

States and Union Territories classified under the ‘emerging startup ecosystems’ category include Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. These regions are at an earlier stage of ecosystem development but have shown promising initiatives.

Speaking at the Startup India event, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the remarkable expansion of India’s startup movement since its launch in 2016. He noted that the country had only around 400 startups at the time of the initiative’s inception. Today, more than two lakh startups are registered with DPIIT, reflecting rapid growth and widespread adoption of entrepreneurial culture.

The minister further stated that these startups have generated an estimated 21 lakh jobs across India, making the sector a critical driver of employment and innovation. The DPIIT rankings, he emphasized, are designed not only to assess performance but also to encourage states to learn from best practices and strengthen collaboration.

For Tripura, the recognition serves as both validation and motivation, positioning the state as a rising player in India’s evolving startup ecosystem.
