Reaffirming the state government’s unwavering commitment to the empowerment and upliftment of Janajati communities, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday announced a comprehensive series of welfare initiatives aimed at strengthening education, livelihood opportunities and socio-economic conditions among tribal populations.

Speaking at the Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas celebration at Khumulwng, the Chief Minister emphasized that the tribal communities of Tripura form not just a demographic section but the core foundation of the state’s cultural identity. “Our Janajati brothers and sisters are the foundation of Tripura’s cultural heritage. Their rich traditions, values and legacy have immensely enriched the social fabric of our state,” he said.

“The tribal communities of Tripura are not merely a group; they are the cultural backbone of our state. Their traditions and customs have shaped Tripura’s identity for centuries. Our government accords the highest priority to ensuring dignity, security, rights and development for every Janajati household” he said.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the present government has prioritized tribal development through focused policies and inclusive governance. “We are committed to ensuring that the benefits of development reach every family, especially those in remote and marginalized areas,” Dr. Saha stated during the event.

Key Announcements Made by the Chief Minister

The government unveiled a series of initiatives designed to improve education, infrastructure, livelihood, and welfare support for tribal communities across Tripura.

1. Hostel Scholarships Expanded to 34,000 Students

Currently, 34,000 students receive hostel scholarships. The Chief Minister announced that 2,700 new seats will be added across various student hostels during the current financial year, significantly expanding access to safe and supportive learning environments.

2. Daily Hostel Scholarship Rate Increased

To further support students, the government will increase the daily hostel scholarship amount from Rs. 80 to Rs. 100 per student starting December 1, 2025.
Financial allocations include:

  • Rs. 8.81 crore for FY 2025–26

  • Rs. 23.65 crore for FY 2026–27

3. New Boys’ Hostel in Agartala

A new 100-bed boys’ hostel for college students will be constructed at Abhoynagar, Agartala at a cost of Rs. 5.74 crore, providing expanded facilities for higher education.

4. Sports Equipment for NGO-Run Hostels

Previously, only government-run hostels received sports infrastructure. From this year, NGO-run hostels will also be included, with a dedicated budget of Rs. 90 lakh, promoting holistic development among tribal students.

5. Smart Classroom Expansion

Smart classes already installed in 100 government ST hostels will now be extended to 70 more ST hostels with a budget of Rs. 2.80 crore, ensuring advanced learning tools for tribal children.

6. Solar-Powered Water Purification Units

Under the Chief Minister Tribal Development Mission, solar composite units with integrated water purifiers will be installed in 50 government tribal hostels, supported by Rs. 19 crore, promoting clean drinking water and sustainable energy.

7. 500 Electric Autos for Unemployed Tribal Youths

To boost livelihood opportunities, the mission will distribute 500 electric autos among unemployed tribal youths.
The initiative includes:

  • Rs. 20 crore financial outlay

  • Government assistance for registration, insurance, and other formalities

  • Driving training programs to ensure skill readiness

8. Support for Tribal Women Weavers

The government will provide yarn to 30,000 tribal women weavers under the Chief Minister Tribal Development Mission, with an allocation of Rs. 3 crore, empowering women’s traditional crafts and micro-enterprises.

Celebrations Mark the Occasion

A grand cultural display featuring 1,000 boys and girls from the Janajati community captivated audiences with the traditional Mamita Dance at Khumpui Academy, Khumulwng. The vibrant performance celebrated the unity, heritage and artistic splendour of Tripura’s tribal communities.

Following the event, the Chief Minister wrote on social media:
“Our Janajati brothers and sisters are the foundation of Tripura’s cultural heritage. Their rich traditions and timeless legacy have greatly enriched our society. The State Government accords the highest priority to the welfare and development of Janajati communities.”

With these diverse initiatives, the Tripura government aims to strengthen education, expand skill development, enhance livelihood opportunities, and promote inclusive growth, ensuring that every tribal household benefits from the state’s development agenda.
