Tripura government, led by CM Dr. Manik Saha, is working to increase MBBS seats by 100, raising medical education capacity to 450 seats. New medical college and super-speciality hospital plans aim to boost healthcare education and infrastructure in Tripura.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha revealed that the government is actively working to secure approval for an additional 100 MBBS seats. If approved, this will raise the total number of undergraduate medical seats in Tripura to 450, expanding opportunities for aspiring doctors across the region.

Currently, Tripura offers 350 MBBS seats across three major medical colleges: Agartala Government Medical College, Tripura Medical College, and Tripura Shantiniketan Medical College. The Chief Minister highlighted the remarkable progress the state has made over the years. “I still vividly remember when the total MBBS seats allotted to Tripura stood at just 10 to 12. Thanks to consistent government efforts, that number has now risen to 350. We are in active discussions to add 100 more seats for the benefit of the youth of Tripura,” said Dr. Saha during his speech at the annual prize distribution ceremony of Shankarachrya Vidya Mandir in Agartala.

Dr. Saha also announced plans for the establishment of a new medical college in the state. Land has been allocated to SHIJA hospital authorities who are eager to develop a medical college alongside a super-speciality hospital, a move that will further strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical education in Tripura.

Beyond medical education, the Chief Minister emphasized Tripura’s growing stature as a regional hub for higher education and innovation. “Tripura has tremendous potential to emerge as a medical and educational center in Northeast India. We already have the Tripura Central University and the Maharaja Bir Bikram State University, which has recently been upgraded. The National Law University has also set up a campus here, in addition to several government and private law colleges,” said Dr. Saha.

The state’s educational infrastructure is further enriched by the presence of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) and the ongoing upgrade of the Tripura Institute of Technology into Tripura Technical University. Additionally, six to seven private universities have established campuses in the state, complementing the 28 general degree colleges that serve thousands of students across Tripura.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Minister lauded Shankarachrya Vidya Mandir for its long-standing contribution to education in the region. “The school has been a beacon of learning for generations, consistently producing outstanding students. I am honored to participate in today’s vibrant and joyous prize distribution event and encourage all students to continue striving for excellence in their academic and personal lives,” he added.

This announcement reflects the state government’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities and ensuring that Tripura’s youth have access to quality professional courses. The expansion of MBBS seats aligns with the growing demand for medical professionals in the region and the government’s vision to improve healthcare services through better training and education.
