Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee urges urgent collective action to eradicate child marriage, highlighting afforestation, cleanliness, and rainwater harvesting as key priorities for sustainable development and social reform across the state.

Rajib Bhattacharjee on Thursday made a strong appeal for united and sustained efforts to eliminate child marriage from Tripura, describing the practice as a “social malice” that must be eradicated through coordinated action by public representatives and administrative authorities.

Addressing the biennial state conference of the West Tripura Zilla Parishad, the BJP Tripura Pradesh president emphasized that governance must evolve with the changing expectations of the people. He acknowledged that no political party can meet public expectations at all times but stressed the importance of setting clear priorities and acting decisively.

“The aspirations and expectations of the public evolve continuously. It is essential for elected representatives at every level to identify priorities and work accordingly, with full support from the administration to ensure public welfare,” Bhattacharjee stated.

He outlined several critical focus areas for the state, including afforestation, cleanliness drives, rainwater harvesting, and the elimination of child marriage. According to him, these sectors are vital for ensuring both sustainable development and social progress.

Highlighting environmental concerns, Bhattacharjee pointed to the growing need for afforestation in the face of rapid development. He noted that while infrastructure projects often lead to deforestation, compensatory plantation efforts have not been sufficient. He urged local representatives to take proactive measures to enhance green cover in their respective areas.

He also referenced national initiatives such as Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, stating that these programs have significantly contributed to raising awareness about environmental protection and sanitation among citizens.

On the issue of water conservation, Bhattacharjee expressed concern over the increasing number of concrete structures and the excessive exploitation of groundwater resources. He advocated for the mandatory integration of rainwater harvesting systems in new buildings across urban areas to ensure long-term water security.

However, the BJP leader placed particular emphasis on the urgent need to tackle child marriage, which he described as a serious social challenge. “Under no circumstances can we allow child marriage to persist in our society. It is our collective responsibility to make the community resilient against such harmful practices,” he asserted.

Bhattacharjee called for a coordinated approach involving both the administration and elected representatives to prevent such practices effectively. He stressed that awareness campaigns, strict enforcement of laws, and community participation are essential components in eliminating child marriage.

The statement comes at a time when concerns over social issues and sustainable development are gaining prominence in Tripura’s governance agenda. Bhattacharjee’s remarks signal a push toward integrated policy action that combines environmental sustainability with social reform.
