Tripura launches free LPG connections under PMUY Phase 3.0 for eligible women. The scheme aims to expand clean cooking fuel access, empower women, improve health outcomes, and cover remaining households left out of earlier phases.
Tripura has officially begun the rollout of free Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections for eligible women beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) Phase 3.0, marking another major step towards women’s empowerment and clean energy access.
The Department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAF & PD), in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), announced the commencement of PMUY Phase 3.0 during a joint press conference held on Friday at the Agartala Press Club. Senior officials from both departments outlined the objectives, scope, and eligibility criteria of the latest phase of the flagship central government scheme.
The rollout follows the Government of India’s decision to release 25 lakh additional free LPG connections nationwide under PMUY Phase 3.0. The initiative is aimed at covering households that were left out in earlier phases of the scheme, particularly women from economically weaker sections who still rely on traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal, or cow dung.
Officials stated that PMUY Phase 3.0 is designed to ensure universal coverage of clean cooking fuel, especially in rural, remote, and underserved areas of Tripura. The scheme focuses on reducing health risks caused by indoor air pollution, lowering the physical burden on women, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Under the new phase, eligible women will receive a free LPG connection, including a gas cylinder and regulator, enabling them to switch to a safer and cleaner cooking option. The officials emphasized that households which could not avail benefits under PMUY Phase 1.0 and Phase 2.0 are the primary targets of this expansion.
The CAF & PD Department clarified that beneficiaries must meet the prescribed eligibility norms and submit required documents to complete the enrollment process. Field-level officials and LPG distributors have been instructed to facilitate smooth registration and ensure transparency in implementation.
According to officials, the PMUY Phase 3.0 rollout will continue through the 2025–2026 period, with a goal of reaching every eligible household in Tripura. Awareness drives will also be conducted to inform women about the benefits of clean cooking fuel and the application process.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has been widely recognized for transforming household energy access across India. With the launch of Phase 3.0, the government aims to further strengthen its commitment to women’s health, dignity, and socio-economic empowerment, while accelerating the transition to clean energy in the state.
