A young tribal farmer from Kalyanpur, Tripura, sets an example of self-reliance by successfully cultivating organic hothouse English cucumbers in a polyhouse with support from the Agriculture Department, inspiring rural youth toward sustainable farming.

A young tribal farmer from Kalyanpur subdivision has emerged as a shining example of innovation, self-reliance, and sustainable agriculture by successfully cultivating high-quality hothouse cucumbers using organic methods. Samar Debbarma, a postgraduate in Sanskrit, has demonstrated how educated youth can turn modern farming techniques into viable livelihood opportunities with institutional support.

Samar, a resident of RS Para ADC Village under Kalyanpur, established a polyhouse at his ancestral home with assistance from the local Agriculture Department. Inside the controlled environment, he cultivated English cucumbers—also known as European or hothouse cucumbers—using fully organic practices. Within a short span, he has already produced more than 200 cucumbers of premium quality, which have begun reaching local markets.

The fresh produce has drawn attention from neighboring villages and traders, earning appreciation for its uniform shape, taste, and chemical-free cultivation. Local consumers have responded positively, seeing the initiative as a healthy and sustainable alternative to conventional vegetables available in the market.

Officials from the Kalyanpur Agriculture Department stated that Samar’s success reflects the department’s continued efforts to encourage innovative and progressive farmers. The department provided crucial support, including guidance on polyhouse construction, supply of quality seeds, and technical inputs necessary for scientific cultivation.

Agriculture officials noted that polyhouse farming allows better control over temperature, moisture, and pests, making it suitable for high-value crops such as English cucumbers. When combined with organic practices, it not only improves crop quality but also ensures environmental sustainability and higher market returns for farmers.

Speaking to reporters, Samar Debbarma said his goal was to prove that educated youth, including those from tribal communities, can become self-reliant through modern agriculture. “I wanted to do something productive using my education and resources available at home. This initiative has given me confidence, and I want to expand it further,” he said.

Samar added that his work has already begun inspiring other young people in the area to explore scientific farming instead of depending solely on traditional practices or seeking employment outside the state. He believes agriculture, when supported by technology and proper guidance, can provide stable income and dignity to rural youth.

Debraj Barman, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer of Kalyanpur, praised Samar’s efforts and described the project as a model for others. He said that scientific polyhouse cultivation of improved cucumber varieties can help farmers move toward self-sufficiency and better economic stability. “Our department is fully prepared to support any farmer willing to adopt innovative and sustainable agricultural practices,” he added.

The success of Samar Debbarma stands as a powerful example of how government support, education, and determination can transform rural livelihoods. As Tripura continues to promote sustainable agriculture and youth participation, such initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the rural economy and encouraging self-employment among young farmers.
