Tripura Police have apprehended six Bangladeshi nationals, including two women and two children, who were attempting to return to their country illegally after traveling from Delhi. Officials disclosed that the arrests took place at a private guesthouse in Khowai district.
According to police sources, the detained individuals, hailing from Bangladesh's Feni district, had entered India a few months ago seeking employment opportunities. During their stay in Delhi, they managed to obtain forged Aadhaar, PAN, and EPIC cards, which were seized by the police.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Kabir (37), Mohammad Mumin (23), Ayasha Khatun (70), and Tania Begum (35). Two minors were also among the group. Preliminary investigations revealed that they were planning to return to Bangladesh with the assistance of Indian touts.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges with illegal immigration and trans-border crimes in the region. Over the past five months, over 570 Bangladeshi nationals and 63 Rohingyas have been detained by the Tripura Police, Railway Police, and Border Security Force (BSF) at various locations, including the Agartala railway station.
In 2024 alone, authorities have apprehended 700 illegal immigrants, including 55 Rohingyas, in Tripura. The BSF has intensified operations along the 856-kilometer India-Bangladesh border in Tripura, seizing contraband worth approximately Rs 50 crore and preventing multiple infiltration attempts.
A BSF spokesperson stated that heightened surveillance along the 4,096-kilometer India-Bangladesh border, spanning five Indian states, has been implemented to address the surge in infiltration attempts and trans-border crimes. The unrest in Bangladesh since June-July has further necessitated strict measures.
