Ayan Sarkar, an agriculture professional hailing from Muhuripur in South Tripura district, has been awarded the prestigious Atal Gaurav Award-2024. The award, conferred by the Atal Foundation, was presented during a ceremony held at the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya in New Delhi on Friday. The event was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Union Minister for Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
After completing his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science from Uttarakhand Agricultural University, Sarkar returned to his home state and dedicated himself to the advancement of agricultural practices in Tripura. Inspired and mentored by the late renowned agricultural scientist Baharul Islam Majumdar, Sarkar established the Tripura Agricultural and Horticultural Graduates Association in 2016. The organization has been instrumental in creating employment opportunities for agricultural graduates and promoting sustainable farming methods across the state. In 2022, Sarkar assumed the role of secretary of the association.
Sarkar’s contributions to the agricultural sector are both wide-ranging and impactful. He is recognized for his pioneering work in organic farming, establishing farmer producer companies, supporting producer groups, and launching initiatives for women’s fish farming. His efforts in agricultural marketing have further strengthened the financial independence of rural farmers.
Notably, Sarkar’s association with five farmer producer companies and more than 4,000 women fish farmers has significantly improved rural livelihoods. These companies, operating under his guidance, have collectively achieved a turnover of nearly ₹1 crore.
In addition to his work with the association, Sarkar currently serves as the state head for Patanjali Food Limited in Tripura. He is leading a collaborative project with the Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department to cultivate plum oil, a venture designed to enhance the economic prospects of the state’s farming community.
The Atal Gaurav Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions to society, and Sarkar’s dedication to agriculture and rural empowerment exemplifies this spirit. His commitment to innovation and sustainable practices has not only benefited farmers in Tripura but has also set a benchmark for agricultural development in the region.
