The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has recommended disciplinary action against Prasun Kanti Tripura, TPS, a senior police officer, for his alleged involvement in a brutal assault on Dr. Kaushik Debnath, a resident of Abhoynagar, Jagatpur. The Commission also urged the Tripura Home Department to provide token compensation of ₹25,000 to the victim, recoverable from the officer's salary.
The incident, which took place on January 25, 2024, reportedly stemmed from a misunderstanding. According to an inquiry report by THRC’s investigation wing, led by Dy. SP L. Molsom, the altercation began when Dr. Kaushik stepped out of his home to meet a Swiggy delivery agent. Confusion arose when the officer’s daughter allegedly misinterpreted Dr. Kaushik’s actions—using his mobile phone to track the delivery agent—as an attempt to record her. She reportedly snatched his phone, though it was later returned by police present at the scene.
What followed was an escalation of events. Prasun Kanti Tripura, accompanied by 15-20 associates, arrived at the scene, allegedly acting on his daughter's claims. The group, including the officer, is accused of physically assaulting Dr. Kaushik, causing severe injuries that required hospitalization in the Surgical Ward of AGMC & GBP Hospital. The THRC report further revealed that the group pursued Dr. Kaushik to the Abhoynagar Outpost, where police on duty intervened to prevent further harm.
The investigation highlighted serious misconduct by the officer, including misuse of his official position, unauthorized absence from duty, and false claims regarding injuries to his family. Medical records and witness testimonies contradicted his statements, confirming no injuries to his daughter or son. The Commission criticized the officer’s actions, emphasizing that the incident arose from a trivial misunderstanding.
Justice S.C. Das, Chairperson of the THRC, stated, “Police officers must act as protectors of the law. Such incidents tarnish the reputation of the force and erode public trust.”
The THRC’s recommendations include compensation for Dr. Kaushik and departmental action against Prasun Kanti Tripura for his alleged misconduct and involvement in criminal activities. The Home Department is expected to ensure accountability, reinforcing ethical standards within the police force.
