Three CPM leaders- Tapas Dutta, Trilokesh Sinha and Babul Debnath of Belonia were awarded simple imprisonment by  Belonia court for two years. They were given jail sentence for attacking a judicial officer during a bandh in September, 2015.

The court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Mitra Das awarded two-year simple imprisonment to the convicts for the offence under section 353 read with Section 34 of IPC.

Besides, the court also jailed them for two months and fined Rs. 500 each; in default of payment, they have to suffer in jail for another ten days for the offence under section 447 and read with Section 34 of IPC.

Sub Inspector Sankar Saha of Belonia police station investigated the case and the court recorded statements of 22 witnesses during the trial. After six years of the incident, the verdict was announced by the court on Thursday.

On September 2, 2015, there was a 24-hour countrywide Bandh sponsored by the Left parties during which the Belonia Court was functioning as usual. But, suddenly a group of bandh picketers including the three Left leaders had entered the Court complex of the District and Sessions Judge, Belonia and misbehaved with the Judge and other court staff. They had also obstructed the court’s functioning.

Based on a suo-moto case registered by Belonia police, the accused persons had appeared before the Court on receipt of summons and were then released on bail during the trial.
