Tension erupted in North Maharani after a Youth Tipra Federation protest approached Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma’s under-construction residence, raising security concerns, political allegations, and questions over police preparedness in the Krishnapur Assembly constituency.
Tension gripped the North Maharani area under the Krishnapur Assembly constituency following a protest march organised by the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), triggering panic and raising serious questions about security arrangements near the under-construction residence of Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma.
According to official sources, the protest march was conducted with prior police permission and was initially peaceful in nature. However, local residents alleged that a section of the demonstrators deviated from the approved route and advanced towards the under-construction house of the Tribal Welfare Minister. The sudden movement reportedly created a tense situation in the locality, prompting concern among nearby residents and workers at the construction site.
Sources present at the site stated that the situation escalated rapidly, forcing labourers working on the minister’s residence to flee out of fear. Construction activity was temporarily halted as panic spread across the area. No official damage to property was reported, but the incident caused widespread anxiety and disruption.
Following the protest, supporters of the Youth Tipra Federation claimed that the agitation intensified after a Tipra Motha supporter was allegedly injured in an attack by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers at Chakmaghat earlier in the day. According to YTF leaders, the protest was also linked to allegations concerning the minister’s property, though no official complaint or documentary evidence was immediately produced to support the claims.
The situation raised serious questions about crowd control and security enforcement, particularly given the presence of police personnel during the protest. Despite official permission being granted for the march, concerns were voiced over how protesters were able to approach the minister’s premises without being stopped.
Senior police officials later stated that the situation was brought under control without the use of force and that no arrests were made. They confirmed that an internal review would be conducted to examine the alleged breach of security protocols and to assess whether the protest violated the conditions under which permission was granted.
Political observers noted that the incident reflects growing political tension in the region ahead of upcoming electoral developments. They warned that confrontations near residences of public representatives could further escalate if not handled with restraint by all sides.

Authorities have urged all political organisations to maintain peace, respect the law, and avoid actions that may disturb public order. An investigation into the Chakmaghat incident and the protest near the minister’s residence is reportedly underway.
