Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital in Tripura earns national recognition under the LaQshya initiative for improving maternal and neonatal care. The hospital receives ₹6 lakh accreditation award for meeting all quality standards set by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital in Khowai district has earned national recognition under the LaQshya (Labour Room Quality Improvement) initiative, a flagship program of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). The recognition marks a major milestone in the hospital’s continuous efforts to improve maternal and newborn care services.
A central evaluation team from the MoHFW visited the Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital in September 2025 and found its labour room, operation theatre, and maternity services fully compliant with national quality standards. Following a thorough assessment, the hospital was officially accredited under the LaQshya program and awarded a cash prize of ₹6 lakh.
Officials further announced that if the hospital continues to uphold these standards, it will receive an annual grant of ₹6 lakh from the central government to maintain and further enhance service quality.
LaQshya: Improving Safe Motherhood Across India
The LaQshya initiative, launched in 2017, is a nationwide program that aims to ensure safe childbirth, improve labour room and maternity OT infrastructure, and reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. Hospitals under this initiative are rigorously assessed on various parameters, including:
-
Cleanliness and infection control in labour rooms
-
Quality of surgical and maternity infrastructure
-
Availability of trained and responsive staff
-
Efficiency in patient care and monitoring
-
Adherence to clinical protocols and emergency readiness
The goal is to make childbirth safer for mothers and infants, especially in rural and semi-urban areas like Teliamura, by fostering accountability and continuous quality improvement in public health facilities.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure in Khowai
The Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital has been steadily upgrading its healthcare infrastructure over the past few years. A major development came in October 2023, when the hospital inaugurated its Cesarean Operation Theatre, significantly improving access to maternal healthcare in the region.
This facility has played a crucial role in enabling emergency obstetric care, reducing high-risk referrals, and ensuring that pregnant women in and around Teliamura can receive timely and safe deliveries.
Speaking at a press conference held on Friday, Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) Dr. Raja Jamatia expressed his gratitude and pride in the hospital’s achievement.
“This success belongs not just to our hospital but to every citizen of Teliamura,” said Dr. Jamatia. “We have always prioritized the safety of mothers and newborns. The recognition from the central government will inspire us to do even better.”
Teamwork and Training Drive the Success
At the same event, Gynaecologist Dr. Sushanta Saha highlighted that the LaQshya accreditation was the result of collective effort, combining staff dedication, continuous training, and infrastructure modernization.
“Through the LaQshya project, we’ve been able to significantly enhance the quality of delivery care,” said Dr. Saha. “With upgraded equipment, trained personnel, and regular monitoring, our hospital has set a new benchmark for maternal care in Tripura.”
Hospital officials also credited the State Health Department and Tripura’s National Health Mission (NHM) for their continuous support in implementing quality assurance mechanisms and ensuring compliance with national standards.
A Model for Rural Healthcare Excellence
Among Tripura’s healthcare institutions, Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital stands out as one of the first to meet all LaQshya evaluation criteria, setting an example for other district and sub-divisional hospitals in the state.
The national recognition not only validates the hospital’s commitment to healthcare excellence but also demonstrates how focused government initiatives and community-driven healthcare delivery can transform rural medical services.
