New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday in its order allowed BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to make amendments in its constitution, and thereby its President, Saurav Ganguly and Secretary, Jay Shah can continue their tenure in BCCI till 2025.

A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chadrachud, and also comprising Justice Hima Kohli passed the order, after the BCCI moved the top court to amend its constitution.

We are of the considered view that the amendment would not dilute the original objective. We accept the proposed amendment, the Supreme Court said, in its order.

The cooling off period will kick in only if the office bearer completes two terms in that position, the Supreme Court said, in its order.

The Supreme Court, while accepting the plea to amend BCCI constitution, also said that the rule will be applicable to the state cricket associations.

The court said that an office bearer who has held any post for 2 consecutive terms either at the State associations or at the BCCI or a combination of both shall not be eligible to contest any further election without completing a 3 year cooling off period.

The apex court in its order said that during this period, the person is not allowed to be a part of any governing committee of the BCCI.
