CPM leader and opposition Left Front’s candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Tripura, former MLA Sudhan Das, submitted his nomination papers on Wednesday. Das, a seasoned politician with six terms as an MLA, was joined by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and other prominent Left leaders as he formalized his candidacy.
In his appeal, Das urged the I.N.D.I. block MLAs to support his bid and defeat the ruling BJP to safeguard democracy. Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Das expressed his belief that the I.N.D.I. block MLAs would back him to strengthen the ongoing movement against the BJP government, which he accused of stifling democratic voices.
Das voiced concern over the current state of the country, citing widespread hardships faced by farmers, workers, laborers, youth, and the general population. He criticized the ruling BJP for the soaring prices of vegetables and essential commodities, arguing that the government’s policies have exacerbated these issues.
He emphasized the importance of resisting the BJP, stating, “Our primary goal should be to remove the BJP from power and protect democracy and the Constitution, both of which are under threat.”
Reflecting on the last Lok Sabha election, Das noted that despite the BJP’s efforts, they struggled to secure over 400 seats. He interpreted this as a clear indication that the people of India are increasingly rejecting the BJP’s governance, choosing instead to withhold their support in the recent election.
