A State wide mock exercise on earthquake disaster will be held on 21 December 2023 simultaneously at 41 locations in identified schools, hospitals, government buildings, residential areas / markets, chemical hazard locations, bridges and landslide prone areas in the districts.
The exercise is being organized jointly by the Tripura Disaster Management Authority and all eight District Disaster Management Authorities in association with National Disaster Management Authority.
The mock exercise will start in the morning on December 21 by blowing sirens at all 41 identified locations for one minute simulating a big earthquake has occurred, depicting huge damage of buildings, loss of lives and properties, many are injured in the State.
For responding to the situation, the State and District Authorities have laid out the sequence of the mock exercise for doing drop cover hold position by the people in the identified locations during earthquake, reporting of the incident response team members in Emergency Operation Centres (EOCs), reporting of line departments, NDRF and armed forces in staging areas, carrying out rescue operations, medical supports, operation of relief camps, arrangement of emergency communications, use of equipment and training skills and other necessary disaster management arrangements are proposed to be demonstrated. The exercise will continue upto 3PM till completion of debriefing session.
The mock exercise is being organized to see the efficacy of disaster management planning and preparedness for earthquake in the State. Such exercises will help the common people to understand the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders, create general awareness among themselves and to improve the capacity for doing better disaster response.
Authorities said common citizens should remain aware of the exercise and not to panic.
For organizing the mock exercise Maj. Gen. Sudhir Bahl, Sr. Consultant, NDMA conducted the Coordination Conference on December 12 with all line department and agencies and the Table Top Exercise on December 19 with the State and District authorities, uniformed personnel and key agencies. During the Table Top Exercise, J.K. Sinha, Chief Secretary, participated as Responsible Officer for the State. Lt. Gen. Sayed Ata Hasnain, Member, NDMA was also present through Video Conference from New Delhi.
