Heavy monsoon rains in South Tripura have displaced over 800 people, prompting emergency relief efforts. Authorities set up 16 relief camps as IMD forecasts more heavy showers. With receding water levels and ongoing precautionary measures, the district remains on high alert to prevent further disruptions and ensure public safety.

Torrential monsoon rains wreaked havoc across South Tripura district, prompting the evacuation of over 800 people as flood-like conditions developed in several low-lying areas. Authorities have set up 16 relief camps to house displaced residents, while state and central disaster response teams remain on high alert. Although the rain has stopped since the evening and water levels are receding, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more heavy rainfall in the coming days.

According to District Magistrate of South Tripura, Md Sajjad P, a total of 840 people belonging to 250 families were evacuated and moved into relief camps after rivers and drainage systems overflowed due to incessant rainfall. However, the situation is gradually returning to normal as the water level in rivers starts to drop.

“The situation has improved significantly since the rain stopped. We are currently operating 16 relief camps to accommodate the displaced families. No major damage to public or private property has been reported so far,” said the District Magistrate while speaking to Tripura Times.

The district administration, with active support from the Water Resource Department, has been closely monitoring the water levels of major rivers at regular intervals. Over the past 24 hours, South Tripura recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall, with Belonia topping the chart at 295 mm, followed by Sabroom and Bagafa.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha is reportedly monitoring the situation closely. As a precautionary measure, one team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been dispatched to South Tripura. Additionally, seven teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have already been stationed in the district to assist in rescue and relief operations.

In a slight relief to residents, the IMD has withdrawn the red alert for South Tripura as of the latest evening bulletin. However, the weather department has forecasted that light to moderate rainfall may continue on Thursday. The forecast also includes warnings of heavy to very heavy showers specifically for South Tripura, which could worsen the already fragile conditions.

The IMD has issued warnings about possible flooding in low-lying urban pockets, traffic disruptions on National Highways NH-08 and NH-108A, and a risk of landslides in hilly terrains. Popular tourist destinations such as Neermahal, Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, and Chabimura may face access difficulties due to blocked or submerged routes.

Local residents have been advised to remain indoors, especially during thunderstorms, and avoid vulnerable structures like old buildings and unstable slopes. Official advisories also urge citizens to follow emergency alerts and avoid unnecessary travel.

Emergency services across the district are on high alert, and temporary shelters, food, and medical supplies have been arranged at all relief camps. Local health officials are also being mobilized to prevent any outbreak of waterborne diseases in the flood-hit areas.

A rise in daytime temperatures by 2-3°C is also expected in the region over the coming days, adding another layer of concern for the displaced families living in temporary accommodations.

Authorities have reassured the public that all possible measures are being taken to mitigate further risk. The coordinated efforts of district officials, disaster response teams, and the state government have so far prevented any major catastrophe.
