SKY finally earned his first Player of the Match award in IPL 2025 after 13 games, scoring 73 off 43 balls. His knock powered Mumbai Indians to a 59-run win over Delhi Capitals, securing a playoff spot. SKY dedicated the award to his wife and celebrated with cake.

In what has been a standout Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season for Suryakumar Yadav, the Mumbai Indians star finally added a long-awaited feather to his cap — his first Player of the Match (POTM) award after 13 matches. Despite being the top scorer for Mumbai and registering 25-plus scores in 12 consecutive games, SKY, as he is fondly known, had somehow eluded the coveted individual honor.

That changed in Match 63 at Wankhede Stadium, where Suryakumar delivered a match-winning performance, scoring a fluent 73 off 43 balls on a spin-friendly surface. His innings helped Mumbai Indians post a competitive 180/5 against Delhi Capitals, a total bolstered by a late blitz of 48 runs in the last two overs alongside Naman Dhir.

The fireworks were followed by an exceptional bowling display from Mitchell Santner (3/11) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/12), who dismantled Delhi’s batting lineup for 121, securing a dominant 59-run victory. The win sealed Mumbai’s spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs as the fourth and final team to qualify.

Speaking after receiving his long-overdue POTM award, Suryakumar credited his wife, Devisha, for reminding him of the unusual drought. “It has been thirteen games now, and my wife told me a sweet story. She said I have gotten all the awards, but not the POTM award. This award is really special today. This trophy is for her,” he said. Suryakumar, now third in the Orange Cap standings with 583 runs, added that they would celebrate the moment with a big cake at home.

The 34-year-old emphasized the importance of staying till the end of the innings. “It was important for a single batter to bat till the end—we knew there was a 15-20 run over somewhere. The way Naman came in and shared that energy with me was great.”

Delhi Capitals’ stand-in captain Faf du Plessis acknowledged Mumbai’s late surge as the turning point. “Momentum is real in cricket. The way they counter-punched in the last two overs undid all the hard work. It felt like David vs. Goliath out there.”

Faf also pointed out the absence of Axar Patel, their regular captain and top spinner, as a critical setback. “On a wicket like this, Axar would have been gold. He was very sick and missed the match. We’ve lacked consistency, especially in the last 7–8 games.”

With momentum and morale firmly back on their side, Mumbai Indians now eye a sixth IPL title — powered by their in-form star, Suryakumar Yadav.
