On the day the Union cabinet gave go ahead with the Kushiyara water sharing  MoU with Bangladesh, a high level delegation of officials led by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, Smita Pant, (Bangladesh-Myanmar Border), visited Sabroom in South Tripura to inspect water management from Feni River on Wednesday. She was accompanied by Lala Krishnakumar Lal (Company Commander 907-Bn BSF), Siddharth Shastri  and Mandeep Singh Tuli Joint Director, MHA.

The delegation inspected the drinking water management for the people of Sabroom town by extracting water from Feni River in Nabin Para area near Sabroom Maitri Bridge.

Bangladesh government gave permission to use Feni river water during the special negotiations of India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission.

According to the agreement, it was decided to use 1.82 cusecs of water per day for drinking water through an intake well 25 meters away from Feni river in Dolbari area near Maitri Bridge.

This water treatment work was started in 2016 in the Daulbari area of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat. It is expected that the water problem will be solved after a long time once the project gets started.

In the meantime the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Bangladesh on withdrawal of up to 153 cusecs of water each by both countries from common border river Kushiyara during dry season for their consumptive water requirement.

The MoU was signed on September 6, 2022, between the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India and Ministry of Water Resources, Government Bangladesh.
