Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday paid tribute to legendary music composer, singer and musician Kumar Sachin Dev Burman on his birth anniversary at a solemn morning programme organised at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala. Describing Sachin Dev Burman as a lasting symbol of Tripura’s rich cultural and musical heritage, the Chief Minister said his extraordinary creativity, distinctive compositions and timeless melodies continue to hold a special place in Indian music.
Dr. Saha offered floral tributes at the bust of Sachin Dev Burman in the presence of dignitaries, officials, cultural personalities and students. He recalled the legendary musician’s immense contribution to Indian music and said his work continues to inspire generations of music lovers and artists.
In his tribute message, the Chief Minister said Sachin Dev Burman’s unique creativity, sweetness of melody and timeless musical creations would remain permanently remembered in the world of Indian music. He said the musician’s remarkable contribution would continue to inspire successive generations and remain a matter of pride for Tripura.
The Chief Minister highlighted the distinctive character of Sachin Dev Burman’s music, which combined classical training with the rich folk traditions of eastern Bengal and the wider northeastern region. According to him, Burman’s music developed a unique identity by bringing together folk melodies, classical influences and the sounds of rural life.
Born on October 1, 1906, in Chartha, Comilla, Sachin Dev Burman belonged to the Manikya royal family of Tripura. Despite his aristocratic background, he developed a deep connection with ordinary people and rural culture. His passion for music led him away from the privileges of royal life and towards a career that eventually established him as one of India’s most influential musicians.

Sachin Dev Burman received his early musical training from his father, Nabadwip Chandra Dev Burman, who was also his first guru. He subsequently learned from several distinguished musicians, including Krishnachandra Dey, Ustad Badal Khan, Ustad Alauddin Khan and Bishmadev Chattopadhyay. These influences helped shape the musical style that later became closely associated with his name.
His musical journey began early, with his first radio broadcast on Calcutta Radio in 1926 and his first record for HMV in 1932. He went on to make significant contributions to Bengali music, cinema and radio before becoming a major figure in the Hindi film industry.
Sachin Dev Burman composed music for several celebrated Hindi films, including Devdas, Guide, Jewel Thief and Abhimaan. His compositions were widely appreciated for their simplicity, emotional depth and distinctive melodic character. His ability to bring folk influences into mainstream film music helped create a musical language that remained popular across generations.
Dr. Saha also remembered the contribution of Burman’s wife, Meera Dev Burman, whose support and involvement formed an important part of his creative journey. The Chief Minister said the story of Sachin Dev Burman’s musical career also reflected the dedication, discipline and cultural commitment that helped him achieve an enduring position in Indian music.
The Chief Minister further recalled the relevance of Sachin Dev Burman’s music during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. His songs were broadcast through Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and became associated with the cultural atmosphere of the liberation struggle. Dr. Saha noted that Burman’s music therefore represented not only artistic excellence but also hope and emotional strength during a significant period in the region’s history.
Sachin Dev Burman received several major honours during his illustrious career, including the Filmfare Awards, National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Shri. His achievements established him as one of the prominent cultural figures associated with the development of Indian film and popular music.
His musical legacy was also carried forward by his son, Rahul Dev Burman, popularly known as R.D. Burman or Pancham. R.D. Burman went on to become one of the most influential composers of Hindi cinema, further extending the Burman family’s contribution to Indian music.
Dr. Saha said that remembering Sachin Dev Burman should go beyond holding an annual commemorative programme. He stressed the importance of preserving and promoting the musician’s body of work so that younger generations can continue to learn from his creativity and dedication to music.
