Actor Ranvir Shorey has shared a fascinating insight into his personal experience with the world of pyramid schemes, revealing that he once came across such a setup during the 1990s when these business models were not widely recognized as fraudulent or misleading. The actor made the revelation while promoting his recently released streaming series, ‘The Pyramid Scheme’, which has been receiving positive responses from viewers.
Speaking during a promotional interaction alongside co-stars Paramvir Cheema and Shekhar Suman, as well as creator Shreyansh Pandey, Shorey reflected on how public perception of pyramid schemes has changed over the years. According to the actor, there was a time when such schemes appeared to be genuine career opportunities rather than financial traps.
Responding to a question about whether he had ever encountered the world portrayed in the series, Shorey recalled an experience from his early years before establishing himself as a television and film actor.
“Yes, I think in my younger days, before my TV career, there was a company in which I had participated at an event. But that’s about it. Sometimes I came across such schemes, though not as a participant. I have seen such schemes. At that time, it was not as known as it is now. It seemed like a legit thing where you could have it as a career option. But now, of course, people are wiser,” he said.
His comments shed light on a period when awareness regarding pyramid schemes was relatively limited, allowing many people to view them as promising business ventures. Over the years, however, increased public awareness, media coverage, and regulatory scrutiny have helped expose the risks associated with such financial models.
In ‘The Pyramid Scheme’, Shorey plays the character of Manoj Srivastav, a man whose aspirations and hopes become entangled in the promise of quick success offered by such a scheme. Discussing his role, the actor explained that the character represents many ordinary individuals who struggle with unfulfilled dreams while dealing with everyday responsibilities.
According to Shorey, a significant section of society often suppresses personal ambitions due to pressing concerns such as earning a livelihood and supporting family members. This hidden desire for a better future can make individuals vulnerable to attractive promises of financial success.
“There is that hope which is kind of bottled up inside. So, I play the character whose hope gets hooked into this scheme,” Shorey explained. He added that portraying the role was both challenging and rewarding, and expressed gratitude to the show’s creators and directors for entrusting him with the character.
The actor also praised directors Ashish R. Shukla and Shreyansh Pandey for helping him bring authenticity to the role. Shorey stated that their guidance played a crucial role in shaping his performance and understanding of the character’s emotional journey.
