Election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Tripura will be held on September 22 next (Thursday).  A letter in this regard from the Election Commission of India was sent to the state government on Wednesday.

This will be the bye-election to the Rajya Sabha seat from Tripura as the seat fell vacant following resignation of Dr Manik Saha as he became the Chief Minister.

According to the communication as received by the state government the ECI notification will be issued on September 5 (Monday) and the last date of nomination will be September 12 ( Monday). The nominations will be scrutinized on September 13 ( Tuesday) while last day for withdrawal of the nomination will be September 15.

The election will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on September 22. Counting will be done on the same day at 5 pm. The entire process will end on September 26.

The ECI took special note of the Covid related cautions and asked the Chief Secretary to depute a senior officer ensure all Covid protocols and arrangements are put in place while making arrangements for conducting the polls.

With this communication now the political parties of the state will gear up to choose their candidate for the Elder’s position in the Parliament.

Dr Saha who became the Rajya Sabha member from BJP ticket had to resign from the position since he became Chief Minister following resignation of Biplab Kumar deb from the position.

It is not yet clear as to whether Congress and Left Front came to support each other with some sort of understanding in the Rajya Sabha elections which can be termed as the prelude to the next assembly polls.

However, going by the present strength of the BJP and IPFT in the state assembly it is almost certain that the BJP candidate will again make it to the Rajya Sabha from Tripura.
