Prof Samir Kumar Sil appointed Acting Registrar of Tripura University. Senior academician and noted biomedical scientist takes charge, pledges rule-based governance, academic discipline, and research excellence at the Central University.
Professor Samir Kumar Sil, a distinguished academician and senior faculty member of the Department of Human Physiology, has officially assumed charge as the Acting Registrar of Tripura University (TU). The appointment marks an important administrative transition at the Central University, which plays a key role in higher education and research in the northeastern region of India.
The responsibility was formally handed over on Monday by the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University, Professor Shyamal Das. The ceremony, held on the university campus, underscored the institution’s commitment to academic continuity, transparency, and adherence to statutory governance during the interim period.
After taking charge, Professor Sil stated that all administrative, academic, and regulatory decisions would be taken strictly in accordance with the provisions laid down in the Tripura University Act and relevant University Grants Commission (UGC) norms. He emphasised that institutional discipline, fairness, and rule-based governance would remain the cornerstone of his tenure as Acting Registrar.
Focus on Academic Discipline and Research Excellence
Addressing students, research scholars, and faculty members, Professor Sil highlighted the growing academic reputation of Tripura at national and international levels. He attributed this recognition to innovative research initiatives, interdisciplinary studies, and the dedication of students and scholars working in the state’s higher education institutions.
“Tripura has been earning recognition beyond regional boundaries due to the innovative research ideas emerging from the state. Students and researchers must make optimal use of the university’s infrastructure, laboratories, libraries, and academic environment to progress in their respective fields,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of regular study, academic discipline, and ethical research practices. According to him, universities must not only impart education but also create responsible citizens and skilled researchers who can contribute meaningfully to society and national development.
An Illustrious Academic Career
Professor Samir Kumar Sil brings with him decades of teaching, research, and administrative experience. He completed his Master’s degree in Science from the University of Calcutta in 1988, graduating in first division and securing third rank in the university, a reflection of his academic excellence from an early stage.
His contributions to biomedical sciences earned him the prestigious Young Biomedical Scientist Award from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Over the years, he has developed a strong international academic profile, serving as a guest lecturer at Tulane University and as an overseas faculty member at Kansas State University in the United States.
In recognition of his teaching excellence, he was conferred the Guest Lecturer Award by the Government of India. In 1989, he was awarded the CSIR-UGC Junior Research Fellowship (NET), one of the most competitive fellowships for young researchers in the country.
Contribution to Research and Policy
Professor Sil has supervised numerous research projects and guided 10 scholars who have been awarded PhD degrees under his mentorship. His research interests span human physiology and biomedical sciences, and his work has been widely cited both in India and internationally.
He has published more than 100 research papers in reputed national and international journals, significantly contributing to scientific knowledge and policy-relevant research. His scholarly output has strengthened the research profile of Tripura University and enhanced its visibility in global academic circles.
Most recently, Professor Sil was selected as a member of the Resource Expert Committee under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This role reflects his standing as a subject expert and his contribution to shaping national research and innovation strategies.

As Acting Registrar, Professor Sil is expected to oversee key administrative functions, ensure smooth coordination between academic and non-academic sections, and support ongoing academic reforms.
