Tripura Police arrest Congress leader Sahajan Islam after months on the run over derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Manik Saha and alleged signature forgery, marking a major breakthrough in a politically sensitive criminal investigation.
Tripura Police have arrested Congress leader Md Sahajan Islam from the Jaypur area on the outskirts of Agartala after he evaded arrest for several months. The arrest is linked to two criminal cases, including alleged derogatory remarks against Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and a separate charge of signature forgery during legal proceedings.
The arrest was confirmed by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Debprasad Roy, who addressed the media and outlined the sequence of events that led to the apprehension. According to the police, the first case dates back to June 8, 2025, when Sahajan Islam allegedly made indecent and offensive remarks targeting the Chief Minister at Shantipara in Agartala. The comments were reportedly recorded and circulated widely on social media platforms, triggering strong public reactions and political controversy across the state.
Following the incident, Tripura Police initiated legal action and registered a case under relevant sections of the law. While Islam’s father and brother were arrested shortly after, the Congress leader himself allegedly went underground to avoid police action. His prolonged absence led investigators to intensify surveillance and tracking efforts across multiple locations.
During the period he remained absconding, Sahajan Islam reportedly filed a bail petition in the District Court. However, during verification of court documents, investigators allegedly discovered that the signature used in the bail application was forged. This development prompted the registration of a second criminal case, further complicating his legal troubles.
“Two separate cases were registered against the accused — Case No. 61/2025 related to the derogatory remarks and Case No. 99/2025 concerning the forged signature,” SDPO Roy stated. He emphasized that forging judicial documents is a serious offense and undermines the integrity of the legal system.
Acting on a confidential tip-off, police teams conducted a targeted operation and successfully arrested Md Sahajan Islam from the Jaypur area on Wednesday. He was taken into custody without incident and later produced before the competent court.

According to police officials, interrogation is currently underway to determine whether additional individuals were involved in assisting him during his period of absconding or in the alleged forgery. Authorities are also examining digital evidence and social media activity related to the viral video.
The arrest has drawn sharp political attention in Tripura, with law enforcement officials reiterating that no individual is above the law, regardless of political affiliation. Further legal proceedings are expected as the investigation continues.
