Pradyot Kishore Debbarma says Tipra Motha will consider no alliance with BJP without implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, stressing constitutional rights and the larger interests of Tripura’s indigenous people.
Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has made his position clear on speculation surrounding a possible political understanding between the BJP and Tipra Motha, saying that his party cannot enter into any alliance without a clear assurance on the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session on Sunday, Debbarma said that reports and speculation about a possible alliance between the two parties had been circulating widely on social media and other platforms. He stressed that the Tiprasa Accord remains the central issue in any discussion over a political arrangement with the BJP.
“I have noticed speculations running thick and fast on various media platforms pertaining to the alliance between Tipra Motha and BJP. I have made my position clear: The only point of discussion is implementation of the Tiprasa Accord. Otherwise, I see no hope left for an alliance,” Debbarma said.
He also rejected the idea that ministerial positions, government posts or opportunities to head Block Advisory Committees could form the basis of an alliance. According to him, such arrangements could benefit only a small number of individuals while failing to address the aspirations of the larger indigenous population.
“If I agree for alliance on these terms, a handful of people—hardly 10 to 15 people—shall get benefitted while the larger interest of lakhs of people will be ignored,” he said, reiterating that his primary commitment was to secure a constitutional solution for the people he represents.
Debbarma said elected representatives of Tipra Motha must ensure that public interest remains above personal political ambitions. He cautioned that when personal interests begin to overshadow the concerns of the wider population, the fundamental purpose of becoming a public representative is defeated.
The Tipra Motha founder also made a significant statement about his own political future, saying that he does not aspire to become the Chief Minister of Tripura. “I don’t want to sit in the Chief Minister’s chair,” he said during the Facebook Live.
He further indicated that he would be prepared to retire from active politics once the Tiprasa Accord is implemented. Debbarma said he could take up an advisory role and guide the next generation, but believed that young leaders should eventually carry the political movement forward.
His comments come at a politically significant time amid renewed speculation over the future of the BJP–Tipra Motha relationship in Tripura. The two parties have had a complex relationship, marked by periods of cooperation as well as disagreements, particularly over issues concerning the indigenous population and the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord.
Tipra Motha joined the BJP-led Tripura government in 2024, with party legislators Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma inducted into the Council of Ministers. Despite the cooperation at the government level, differences over key political demands have remained.
The issue has gained further significance following Tipra Motha’s strong performance in the 2026 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections, where the party won 24 of the 28 seats and secured a clear mandate to form the council government.

Amid the latest political developments, speculation has also emerged about possible future roles for Pradyot Debbarma, including a gubernatorial position or a Rajya Sabha nomination. However, there has been no official confirmation from either the BJP or Debbarma regarding any such proposal.
Debbarma’s latest remarks indicate that the central question for Tipra Motha is not his personal political ambition but whether concrete political and constitutional assurances can be secured for Tripura’s indigenous population.

The immediate focus is now expected to remain on the scheduled meeting in New Delhi involving the Union Home Minister and key Tripura political leaders. The outcome could provide greater clarity on whether the BJP and Tipra Motha are heading towards a renewed political understanding or whether differences over the Tiprasa Accord will continue to shape their relationship.
