PM Modi congratulated Amul and IFFCO for achieving the top two global cooperative rankings, marking a proud milestone for India’s cooperative sector. The achievement highlights India’s dairy and fertilizer cooperatives as global models of empowerment and self-reliance.

In a remarkable achievement for India’s cooperative movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated Amul and the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) for securing the first and second positions in the global rankings for cooperatives, respectively. The recognition underscores India’s growing leadership in cooperative enterprise and grassroots economic empowerment.

Congratulations to Amul and IFFCO. India’s cooperative sector is vibrant and is also transforming several lives. Our Government is taking numerous steps to further encourage this sector in the times to come,” PM Modi posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This landmark accomplishment reflects India’s deep-rooted cooperative culture and the nation’s success in combining community participation with economic progress. Both Amul and IFFCO have long been at the forefront of empowering rural farmers and women, promoting self-reliance and inclusive growth.

A Proud Moment for India’s Cooperative Sector

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah also lauded the two organizations for their exceptional global recognition. In his message on X, Shah wrote, “A proud moment for Bharat! Heartiest congratulations to Amul and IFFCO for occupying the first two ranks among the top ten cooperatives in the world.

He further added, “It is an honour to the tireless dedication of millions of women associated with Amul and farmers contributing to the IFFCO. It is also a testament to the boundless potential of cooperatives, which are being transformed into a global model of empowerment and self-reliance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The announcement of these rankings marks a significant milestone for India’s cooperative movement, which has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s socio-economic development.

India’s Dairy Revolution: Amul’s Cooperative Legacy

Amul, known as the world’s largest dairy cooperative, was founded in 1946 and has become synonymous with India’s White Revolution. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets the Amul brand, has empowered millions of rural dairy farmers across India, particularly women.

The cooperative model of Amul ensures that profits return directly to farmers, enhancing their incomes while sustaining the world’s largest network of milk producers. Its success showcases how farmer-led organizations can drive industrial-scale growth without compromising equity or inclusivity.

IFFCO: Driving Fertilizer Self-Reliance

IFFCO, the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited, represents more than 35,000 member cooperatives and reaches nearly 50 million farmers across India. As one of the largest fertilizer producers globally, IFFCO plays a crucial role in ensuring India’s agricultural productivity and food security.

Its global ranking highlights the organization’s innovation in sustainable agriculture and its contribution to enhancing soil health and farmers’ prosperity. IFFCO’s initiatives in green ammonia, bio-fertilizers, and digital agriculture platforms are paving the way for environmentally responsible farming.

Empowering Rural India

India’s cooperative sector forms the backbone of rural livelihoods, spanning dairy, agriculture, credit, and housing. The success of Amul and IFFCO reinforces the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize and globalize cooperatives through digital integration, financial assistance, and policy support.

The Ministry of Cooperation, established in 2021, has prioritized reforms to strengthen transparency, governance, and competitiveness within cooperatives. With new initiatives in credit access, technology integration, and skill development, the sector is poised for sustained growth.

A Model of Inclusive Development

India’s dairy and fertilizer cooperatives are not merely business entities—they represent a vision of economic democracy. The cooperative movement has empowered millions of small farmers, women, and rural workers, turning them into stakeholders in the country’s growth story.

From village milk collection centers to modern fertilizer plants, the cooperative ethos has demonstrated that collective effort and trust can achieve what corporate monopolies often cannot—sustainable prosperity rooted in community ownership.

The Road Ahead

As India continues to lead the world in milk production and sustainable agriculture, the global recognition of Amul and IFFCO is both a validation and a motivation. It reinforces the vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation), which the government aims to expand through national cooperative policies and infrastructure support.
