With assembly polls only one and half years away, and civic polls across the state likely to be held in November end Tripura politics are in a ferment. Within two days after leaving their good old Congress former TPCC president Pijush Biswas, former MLA Tapas Dey and Tejen Das have launched a new political party Tripura Democratic Front (TDF).

Son of Pijush Biswas  and former Youth Congress president Pujan Biswas has been made the president of the newly formed party. Formation of the new party has been announced in a press conference at Agartala Press Club on Thursday. The leaders said, a  State-level committee of the newly floated party TDF will be formed within a week.

All the leaders who floated the new TDF were strongly against appointment of Birajit Sinha as the TPCC president and quit the party in protest. Those who have formed the TDF were associated with the Congress since their student days and for the last about 50 years they remained loyal to Congress during both the spring and the winter—never leaving Congress ever.

Though none of them were ever a crowd puller or good public orator they had however been taken with seriousness as far as squabble ridden Congress politics were concerned.

Speaking on the occasion, Tapas Dey explained the reasons behind quitting the party and floating a new party. He said AICC appointed a new chief for Tripura Pradesh Congress who miserably failed to steer the Congress party during the 2018 Assembly Polls.

The flag of TDP is also interesting – it is a white flying pigeon with a crown hanging over its skull on deep green background. Several critics related the crown to TDP’s connection with Tipra Motha. Earlier, Pujan Biswas, after quitting the party hinted at good political relation with Tipra Motha and commented that the Greater Tipraland demand was a constitutionally legitimate demand.

Depicting the pathetic condition of Congress, Dey said, “Percentage of valid votes polled by Congress came down to below 2 percent and all but one forfeited deposits in 58 seats out of 60 seats in which Congress contested”. He added, veteran leaders, will guide and share experience to the youth leaders in the TDF.

Pijush Biswas also echoed the same and expressed dismay at the AICC decision.

The newly appointed president of TDF, Pujan Biswas said, “Together we will fight for the people of our land”.

Many of the leaders and supporters of the newly formed TDF are in good rapport with Tipra Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.

With the Urban civic body polls are ensuing, TDF may secure tactical support from the Motha. Even as TDF leaders denied any plan to forge an alliance with any party as of now, Political analysts opined it is not unlikely that TMC, Motha and TDF will come to a common platform before the Assembly polls.
