Disability is a matter of perception. Conquering adversity is not a difficult task for those who can understand it easily—and fight it out with perseverance, dedication and determination. Meet 23-year-old Pankaj who realized this at an early age and took the world head on. And, physical obstacles in life simply failed to overcome him.
Pankaj Roy since his birth can neither speak nor hear. But that did not deter him as he could realize his own incapacity and decided to move on with unreliable perseverance and determination. As his parents Manoj Roy, a mathematics teacher at Vanividyapith Class XII Girls’ School, mother Poornima Roy, Vice Chairman of Tripura Grameen Krishi and Cooperative Bank- stood sold behind him.
As he is speech and hearing impaired, there is no way to understand something at a glance. Pankaj has achieved eye-catching achievements in a short period of time.
At the age of 14, Divyang Pankaj brightened the face of the state by winning first place in the All India Calligraphy Competition. There is no drawing competition in the capital from which he has not been awarded. Cabinets at home are full of mementos, medals and certificates. He joined martial arts after establishing himself as a talented child painter at the all-India level. After a few years of training, Pankaj became proficient in several branches of martial arts. He participated in national and international competitions in Kolkata, Guwahati, Goa, Mumbai and Delhi. Although he did not win medals in all competitions, he won bronze and silver medals in several. The competition was an unequal battle because everyone else was a natural competitor.
In fact, this boy did not come to stop easily. As a result, at the age of 23, he has become an inspiration to others. He got training from Pinaki Chakraborty and Bapan Chakraborty who are skilled in kick boxing and karate. He recently earned a black belt in martial arts. Along with drawing and martial arts, he continues to study. Passed class 12 through English medium from Farando School for Speech and Hearing, Nandanagar and is currently a final year Honors student of Government Art College. Former Governor Tathagata Roy and former President Pranab Mukherjee have met at different points of his life.
His younger brother Mainak Roy is also a child painter, recipient of Central Government Scholarship in All India Competition in Sculpture category as well.
In 2015, he was recognized as the only child genius by Dr. BC Roy Memorial Committee. Vishalgarh Press Club, Gomati District BSU Medha Anwesha and other organizations gave him a warm reception. Currently he trains young karatekas at Pinaki Chakraborty’s coaching center adjacent to IGM. In future he wants to become a photojournalist. It can be said for sure that he will surprise in that direction as well. And so in short it can be said that Inspiration is another name of Pankaj.
