In a significant development, Pakistan on Saturday violated the newly established ceasefire agreement along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) at multiple locations, just hours after both nations agreed to a truce. The violations occurred shortly after the ceasefire announcement, raising concerns about Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining peace in the region.
The violation by the Pakistan army on Saturday evening was reported in Akhnoor, Mendhar, R.S. Pura, Chamb, Bhimber and Gurez sectors while loud blasts were also heard in Srinagar. Reports said a drone was brought down in Baramulla town as well. There are reports of ceasefire violation in Arnia sector of the international border in Samba district.

According to official sources, the Border Security Force (BSF) has been instructed to respond firmly to any further ceasefire violations. The Indian security apparatus remains on high alert, with directives to counter any hostile activities with full force to safeguard national security.
The ceasefire violations came as a surprise, especially since the ceasefire agreement had been reached earlier on Saturday following Pakistan’s initiation of truce discussions. The agreement was confirmed by both the Indian government and the Pakistan government, marking what was expected to be a de-escalation of recent hostilities triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.

Escalating Tensions and Military Response Shortly after the ceasefire declaration, multiple explosions were reported in Srinagar, leading to a blackout in the area as a precautionary measure. In a related incident, drones were detected and subsequently neutralized by Indian forces in Rajasthan’s Pokhran and in the Baramulla district of Kashmir. The presence of drones raised alarms about the potential use of aerial surveillance or hostile actions by Pakistan’s military units.

Additionally, artillery shelling was reported along the International Border in the Akhnoor, Rajouri, and RS Pura sectors. The Pakistan Army also resorted to heavy shelling along the LoC in the Palanwalla sector of Jammu. As tensions escalated, air raid sirens were triggered in the Samba district, heightening alert levels in the region.
In the Baramulla sector, one drone was brought down while other suspicious Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) were observed in the vicinity. As a precaution, a blackout was enforced in both Baramulla and Srinagar, while aerial activity was also reported over Katra, the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple pilgrimage.
Political Reactions and Public Concerns Reacting to the sudden escalation, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed frustration via social media. “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!” he tweeted, highlighting the unexpected breach of the ceasefire. In a follow-up post, Abdullah mentioned that air defense units in Srinagar had engaged hostile aerial targets, sharing a video that reportedly captured one of the drone incidents.

The ceasefire agreement had earlier been announced as a breakthrough in reducing military tensions between India and Pakistan. The talks leading to the agreement took place at the level of the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations. However, with Pakistan violating the terms so soon after the declaration, Indian defense officials are reassessing the situation and preparing for possible escalations.
International Implications and Future Outlook The international community has been monitoring the situation closely, with diplomatic channels remaining open. However, the abrupt ceasefire violations cast doubt on Pakistan’s willingness to honor agreements aimed at reducing cross-border violence. India has reiterated that any further provocations will be met with robust military responses to ensure the safety of its territory and citizens.

As both sides continue to mobilize forces along the border, the fragile truce remains under severe strain. Indian defense analysts suggest that Pakistan’s actions may be a calculated attempt to test India’s resolve or to shift focus from internal political challenges. Regardless of the motive, India’s stance remains clear: while committed to peace, any hostile action will be met with unwavering resistance.
