The ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited (OTPC) has announced the formation of a Joint Venture (JV) Company with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) in Guwahati, as reported by the Times News. The purpose of this collaboration is to establish a phased Battery Energy Storage System Project in Assam, with a capacity of up to 250 MW / 500 MWh.

The Joint Venture Agreement was signed by Sanil C. Namboodiripad, Managing Director of OTPC, and Rakesh Kumar (IAS), Managing Director of APDCL. The project aims to fulfill the vision of the Chief Minister of Assam to make the state a leader in the green energy transition. The Managing Director of APDCL stated that the project is crucial for the successful integration of upcoming solar power projects and will position Assam as a pioneer in implementing energy storage systems.

The project will require an investment of Rs 2,000 Crore and is expected to generate significant direct and indirect employment opportunities during the construction and operation stages. The Battery Energy Storage System will improve power availability during peak load hours, enhance the integration of renewable energy generation with the electricity grid, and enhance grid reliability.

OTPC, which already operates a 726 MW gas-based combined cycle power plant catering to the energy demand of the northeastern states, aims to be a reliable partner in Assam’s transition to a decarbonized energy mix. The company plans to set up energy storage systems across India to facilitate the integration of green energy into the existing electric power system, thereby contributing to the nation’s clean energy transition.
