The heritage building of IGM Hospital will be renovated to ensure its conservation. Today Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha instructed the health department to take up retrofitting works of this heritage building. The original building of the hospital will be renovated in line with preservation works of Ujjayanta Palace and Pushpabanta Palace.

It is worth mentioning here that Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya Bahadur started this hospital with 30 bed way back in 1873. In the early 1900s, British Government took initiative for building grand memorials in the name of Queen Victoria in different parts of the country with the donations from princely rulers. The then king of Tripura Radhakishore Manikya Bahadur renovated the hospital, increasing the number of beds to 54 for general patients and 10 for patients with contagious diseases and named it ‘Victoria Memorial Hospital’.

The name was inscribed on the top of the main building and it was inaugurated by the then British Lieutenant Governor of Bengal Sir John Woodburn in 1904. The Victoria Memorial Hospital was renamed later in 1990 as ‘Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital’. At present IGM Hospital is running with all modern facilities with the strength of 608 beds. On an average, daily 1200-1500 patients are coming to get medical service at its outdoor.

IGM Hospital is also supporting academic institutions and courses like Agartala Government Dental College, Government Nursing College, post MBBS NBEMS course, training of all paramedical professionals and Community Health Officials.
