A six year old child -Uaday Rudra Pal – who was living with a rare heart condition called  ‘single atrium with total septal defect’ meaning having a heart that does have three chambers instead of four  was successfully operated upon in Agartala Government Medical College Hospital. The critical heart surgery did not even put financial burden on the poor family as it was covered by Ayushman scheme. The boy is doing fine now and is recovering fast doctors said.

Uday who hails from Lembucherra in Teliamura sub-division was admitted at the GBP hospital with complaint of fever and cough.  He was also having other difficulties also relat ing to heart. During medical examinations at Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology (CTVS-IR) department, it was found that the child was having ‘single atrium with total septal defect’. Finally, the medical team led by cardiac surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee performed the critical heart surgery and created the fourth chamber in the heart of the patient. The surgery took almost six hours.

The twelve-member medical team included cardiac anaesthesiologist Dr. Manimoy Debbarma, cardiac intensivist Dr. Surajit Paul, perfusionist Sujan Sahu and surgical assistant Sudipta Mandal.

Dr. Bhattacharjee was assisted by cardiologist Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi and Dr. Arup Deb in identifying heart disease of the child.
