NIELIT Agartala will introduce B.Tech programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the 2026-27 academic session. The new courses aim to strengthen technical education in Tripura, create industry-ready professionals, expand opportunities in advanced computing, and enhance the Northeast’s contribution to India’s growing digital economy.

NIELIT Agartala has announced the introduction of two new Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes in Computer Science and Engineering with specialization in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) from the academic year 2026-27.

The initiative is expected to create new opportunities for students aspiring to build careers in advanced computing, data science, automation, and emerging digital technologies. According to an official release, the newly introduced programmes will have an intake capacity of 60 seats and are designed to equip students with the skills required to meet the growing demand for AI and ML professionals across various industries.

Admissions to the programmes will be conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process as well as NIELIT’s own entrance examination, providing multiple pathways for aspiring candidates to secure admission.

NIELIT Agartala, which functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, has already established itself as a prominent institution for technical education in the region. The institute currently offers a variety of academic programmes, including Diploma in Computer Science and Technology, Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), and M.Tech in Data Engineering.

With the addition of AI and Machine Learning specializations, the institute aims to strengthen its position as a leading centre for cutting-edge technological education in Northeast India. Officials stated that the new courses have been designed in line with emerging industry requirements and national priorities focused on digital transformation, innovation, and technology-driven economic growth.

A notable feature of the institute’s educational policy is its commitment to inclusive learning. Officials highlighted that Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students enrolled at NIELIT are exempted from paying tuition fees, ensuring that students from marginalized communities can access quality technical education without financial barriers.

The announcement comes at a time when Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are transforming sectors such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, agriculture, cybersecurity, and public administration. Industry demand for professionals skilled in these technologies continues to rise, making AI and ML among the most sought-after career fields globally.

Education experts believe the launch of these programmes will not only benefit students from Tripura but also attract aspiring engineers from across the Northeast. The move is expected to enhance the region’s technological capabilities, generate skilled human resources, and contribute to India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
