Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to run two special unreserved passenger trains between Agartala–Dharmanagar and Agartala–Sabroom from October 20–22, 2025, to manage Diwali rush and facilitate pilgrim travel to Tripura Sundari Temple and North Tripura.

In a move aimed at ensuring smooth travel during the upcoming Diwali festival, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced the operation of two special unreserved passenger trains to manage the expected surge of pilgrims and passengers in Tripura. The initiative comes as thousands of devotees are anticipated to visit the Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur and Dharmanagar in North Tripura, both renowned for their grand festive celebrations.

According to a press release issued by the NFR on Sunday, the Lumding (LMG) Division has approved the operation of two pairs of special trains:

  • Train No. 07615/07616 (Agartala–Dharmanagar–Agartala)

  • Train No. 07613/07614 (Agartala–Sabroom–Agartala)

These trains will run from October 20 to October 22, 2025, providing additional capacity for passengers traveling during the festive rush.

Focus on Pilgrim Convenience

The special services are designed to ensure that devotees visiting the Tripura Sundari Temple, one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas, can reach the site comfortably during the Diwali festivities. The temple, situated in Udaipur, attracts tens of thousands of devotees from across the region every year, particularly during Diwali and Kali Puja.

Similarly, Dharmanagar in North Tripura witnesses massive footfall during the festive season, with elaborate Diwali and Kali Puja celebrations drawing devotees and tourists alike. The additional trains are expected to provide crucial relief to passengers and help decongest regular train services on the Agartala–Dharmanagar and Agartala–Sabroom routes.

Warm Acknowledgment from the State Government

Tripura’s Minister for Tourism and Transport, Sushanta Chowdhury, welcomed the move and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Central leadership for their continued support in improving the state’s rail connectivity.

In a social media post, Chowdhury conveyed his thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha for their dedicated efforts in promoting religious tourism and infrastructure development in the state.

“The introduction of these special trains will not only make travel easier for pilgrims visiting the Tripura Sundari Temple but also promote connectivity across the state during one of the busiest times of the year,” Chowdhury stated.

He also highlighted that the initiative reflects the Union Government’s commitment to fostering the growth of tourism and cultural heritage in the northeastern states.

A Boost for Religious and Cultural Tourism

The Tripura Sundari Temple, located about 55 km from Agartala, is one of the holiest shrines in Eastern India. Dedicated to Goddess Tripureswari, the temple becomes a focal point for devotees during Diwali, who come to offer prayers and witness the grand rituals, lighting, and cultural events.

Meanwhile, Dharmanagar has emerged as another spiritual hub where Diwali and Kali Puja are celebrated with immense enthusiasm, transforming the town into a vibrant cultural center. The special train arrangements are expected to give a significant push to religious tourism in Tripura, which has been gaining momentum under the state’s strategic tourism initiatives.

Railway Efforts to Handle Festive Rush

The NFR has been consistently introducing special and additional services during peak festive periods to manage passenger load across the northeastern region. By providing unreserved passenger trains, the railway ensures accessibility and affordability for common travelers, especially those visiting for religious or family purposes.

Officials noted that adequate security and crowd management measures would be in place to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers during the festive period. Passengers have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly and arrive early at the stations to avoid congestion.

Connecting Devotion, Tradition, and Connectivity

The announcement underscores the growing importance of Tripura as a hub for spiritual tourism and cultural celebration. As Diwali approaches, the combined efforts of the NFR and the Tripura Government aim to provide seamless travel experiences, enhance connectivity, and uphold the spirit of unity and devotion that defines the festival.
