Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb has written to Home Minister Amit Shah, urging immediate attention to the uncompleted sections of the Indo-Bangladesh border fencing in Tripura. Spanning 856 kilometers, the Indo-Bangladesh border remains unfenced for approximately 26.64 kilometers. Deb expressed concern over the construction agencies’ slow pace of work and underscored that land acquisition issues were not delaying the process.
According to Deb, aging sections of the existing border fencing have deteriorated, with rust and wear posing additional vulnerabilities. The law and order situation in Bangladesh has recently become unstable, raising concerns that the unfenced areas could be exploited by vested interests seeking to cross into India. With rising security concerns, he emphasized that the fence’s completion and maintenance are now critical for national security and regional peace.
Deb’s communication reflects heightened caution as unrest in Bangladesh unfolds. The Border Security Force (BSF) has already stepped up vigilance along the northeastern border areas, with close coordination from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Currently, 18 BSF battalions guard the 856-kilometer border, with additional resources including hand-held thermal imagers and drones deployed to strengthen surveillance. The BSF’s strategy also focuses on preventing trans-border crime and deterring illegal crossings.
Having recently joined the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Deb outlined these concerns in his letter to Shah, stating, “Now, with the disturbed law and order situation in Bangladesh, there is a possibility of vested interests taking advantage of the porous border.” He urged the Central Government to expedite the construction efforts for the remaining unfenced sections and to renovate dilapidated portions.
As the situation in Bangladesh remains fluid, MP Deb’s appeal underscores the urgent need for reinforced security infrastructure to prevent infiltration and secure the border. Effective border fencing, combined with enhanced BSF vigilance, remains essential to safeguarding Tripura and maintaining stability in the region.
