IPFT leader and former minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia faced police action in New Delhi for allegedly outraging the modesty of a girl student. He was picked up by Delhi police from Tripura Bhawan on Wednesday. He was questioned by theDelhi Police for hours and then served with a notice under CrPC 41 (A) . An FIR (111/22) was also lodged under section 354/ 354 (A) of the IPC.
The section pertains to ‘assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty.—Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both’.
The former minister who had recently been politically also sidelined in the IPFT and had been planning to join the TIPRA Motha, was staying in the Tripura Bhawan.
The girl, who also belongs to the Jamatia community, is a student in New Delhi and for some days she was staying in Delhi’s Kautilya Marg Tripura Bhawan. It was alleged that Mevar Kumar Jamatia out raged her modesty and she filed an FIR in a Delhi Police station.
Official sources said, a team of Delhi police visited Tripura Bhawan twice on Tuesday night and talked to the girl student. They recorded her statement regarding her complaint against Mevar Kumar Jamatia, MLA. The police team visited Tripura Bhawan on Wednesday again, this time early in the morning, and took both the former minister and the girl student to police station.
An official letter signed Jt Resident Commissioner of Tripura Bhawan , New Delhi Ranjit Das was also received by the GA(SA) Department here.
The incident is likely to create a serious commition in the state politics. Mevar Kumar Jamatia is an influential leader and TIPRA Motha is eagerly waiting for his joining. His wife Gita Jamatia has already joined the TIPRA Motha.
Even if he is not a minister and already sidelined in his own party IPFT, Jamatia is still an MLA. He was axed from the cabinet berth at the instance of IPFT supremo N C Debbarma when Dr Manik Saha became Chief Minister.
