International Matribhasha Diwas was celebrated across the state in a festive mood. While in the capital main programme was held at Rabindra Sata Barshiki Bhawan where Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath , ICA minister Sushanta Chowdhury , Tripura Tea Development Corporation chairman Santosh Saha and Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner Arif Mohammed, Dirctor Higher Education NC Sharma et al were present.

In the programme the speakers expressed concern at the way many a small languages are going extinct every year. They stressed on the need of protecting and preserving all the languages-and also to enrich them- so that the arts, literature culture and social identities linked with the languages could be done in effective and meaningful ways.

A cultural programme was also organized on the occasion.

The programme was jointly organized by the Tripura government and Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Tripura.

A colourful procession from several ethnic identities marched through the city attired in their traditional attire and holding placards written in their own language and scripts.

Before the procession the Education Minister and Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner told the media about the importance of the International Mother Tongue Day that commemorates the martyrdom of the Bengalis in the then East Pakistan in 1952 for protecting and making the Bangla language as their state language.

Reports reaching here from other parts of the state also said that Matribhasha Diwas was celebrated with colourful programmes and enthusiasm in a befitting manner.
