The Malayalam film industry is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved actors, Salim Kumar, who passed away at the age of 56 on Saturday night. The veteran actor, celebrated for his outstanding contributions to Malayalam cinema through comedy, drama, and character roles, reportedly breathed his last at around 10:43 pm after being admitted to a hospital earlier in the day.

According to reports, Salim Kumar had undergone a liver transplant several years ago and was recently facing health complications. He was placed on ventilator support before his demise. News of his death has sent shockwaves across Kerala and the wider Indian film fraternity, prompting an outpouring of grief from actors, political leaders, filmmakers, and fans.

Among those who paid tribute was Padma Bhushan awardee and Malayalam cinema superstar Mammootty. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Mammootty shared a photograph of the late actor and penned an emotional message in Malayalam that reflected the deep bond the two shared.

In his heartfelt tribute, Mammootty wrote that Salim Kumar, who spent his life making people laugh, think, and sometimes cry through his performances, has now left behind only sorrow. Describing him as a dear brother, Mammootty said that his departure had become an “unending sorrow,” a statement that resonated deeply with fans and colleagues alike.

Political leaders also expressed their condolences. Kerala Congress leader V. D. Satheesan paid tribute to the actor, describing him as more than just a comedy icon. He remembered Salim Kumar as a fearless individual who openly expressed his political beliefs and remained deeply connected to people. Satheesan noted that Malayalam cinema had lost a legend while he personally had lost a brother.

Salim Kumar was widely regarded as one of the most versatile performers in Malayalam cinema. Beginning his career as a mimicry artist with the renowned cultural institution Kalabhavan, he gradually carved a unique place for himself in the entertainment industry. His exceptional comic timing and natural acting skills helped him become one of the most recognizable faces in Malayalam films during the late 1990s and 2000s.

Over the years, he delivered unforgettable performances in popular films such as Meesa Madhavan, Pulival Kalyanam, and several other box-office successes. His dialogues and characters became deeply embedded in Kerala’s popular culture, earning him immense popularity among audiences of all ages.

While he was best known for his comedic roles, Salim Kumar also demonstrated remarkable depth as a dramatic actor. His career-defining performance in Adaminte Makan Abu earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, establishing him as one of India’s finest performers. The role showcased his ability to move beyond comedy and deliver emotionally powerful performances that won critical acclaim nationwide.

Throughout a career spanning nearly three decades and hundreds of films, Salim Kumar received multiple Kerala State Film Awards and earned respect as an actor capable of excelling in diverse roles. He later expanded his creative pursuits into directing and writing, with Karutha Joothan receiving appreciation for its storytelling.
