Malaysia will host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit from October 2-4, 2026, marking Formula 1’s return to Sepang after nine years. The race replaces Bahrain’s hosting due to regional challenges while preserving the 2026 F1 calendar.
Formula 1 will make a highly anticipated return to Malaysia in 2026, with the iconic Sepang International Circuit confirmed as the venue for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. Formula 1 and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) officially announced on Sunday that the race will be held from October 2 to 4, 2026, marking the first Formula 1 event at Sepang since 2017.
The event will occupy its scheduled position between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix, while the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 calendar will remain unchanged. The announcement is subject to the completion of final agreements and approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
The race will officially be known as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, following a collaborative agreement involving Formula 1, the FIA, and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia. The arrangement was introduced to ensure that Bahrain’s Grand Prix remains part of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship despite regional challenges that would have otherwise prevented the event from taking place in Bahrain.
Formula 1 stated that the agreement reflects Bahrain’s longstanding commitment to the championship, having become the first Middle Eastern nation to host a Formula 1 race in 2004. At the same time, the organisation acknowledged Malaysia’s willingness to support the championship by welcoming the event back to the renowned Sepang circuit.
Sepang International Circuit has long been regarded as one of Formula 1’s most exciting venues. Known for its challenging high-speed corners, long straights, unpredictable tropical weather, and passionate fan base, the Malaysian track has produced several memorable races throughout its history. Since hosting its last Formula 1 race in 2017, fans have consistently hoped for the circuit’s return to the championship calendar.
Welcoming the announcement, Bahrain Crown Prince and Prime Minister His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa described the arrangement as a reflection of Bahrain’s enduring passion for Formula 1 and the strong partnership between Bahrain and Malaysia.
He said Bahrain remains committed to supporting the championship despite ongoing regional challenges and pledged to ensure the race continues to be a successful and memorable event for teams, drivers, officials, and fans.
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim also welcomed the decision, saying Malaysia was honoured to support Bahrain, Formula 1, and the FIA by hosting the prestigious race at Sepang.
He said the collaboration represents far more than staging an international sporting event, describing it as a symbol of the close friendship, mutual trust, and long-standing partnership between Malaysia and the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Prime Minister added that Malaysia is fully prepared to welcome Formula 1 teams, officials, and fans back to Sepang after nearly a decade.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the governing body, together with Formula One Management, carefully explored every possible option while placing the safety and wellbeing of teams, officials, volunteers, and spectators as the highest priority.
He noted that Formula 1’s return to Sepang demonstrates Malaysia’s continued commitment to international motorsport and highlights the strength of cooperation between nations in ensuring the championship proceeds without disruption.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali described the announcement as fantastic news for motorsport enthusiasts around the world. He said Formula 1 has once again demonstrated its flexibility and ability to deliver a complete championship schedule under challenging circumstances.

Domenicali praised Malaysia as an outstanding destination and said Sepang holds a special place in Formula 1 history, offering one of the sport’s most exciting racing environments. Formula 1 also confirmed that details regarding ticket sales and event arrangements for the 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia will be announced at a later date.
