Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to commemorate India’s historic victory over Pakistan during the 1999 Kargil War. This year marks the 27th anniversary of the victory, which remains one of the most significant chapters in India’s military history.
The conflict began in May 1999 when Pakistani forces infiltrated across the Line of Control (LoC) and occupied strategic mountain positions with the objective of disrupting the vital link between Kashmir and Ladakh. In response, the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay, supported by the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar and full naval deployment. After weeks of intense combat in extremely challenging mountainous terrain, Indian forces successfully reclaimed the occupied positions, defeating the infiltrators and restoring territorial integrity.
