A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale struck southeastern Afghanistan late last night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
According to the USGS, the quake was recorded 27 kilometres east-northeast of Jalalabad at 0047 hrs IST at a depth of 8 kilometres.
About 20 minutes later, Nangarhar province experienced another tremor, registering a magnitude of 4.5 at a depth of 10 kilometres.
At least nine people were killed and 15 others injured in the quake. Taliban government officials have urged aid organisations to help in rescue efforts in the remote mountainous areas.
The quake was felt across Pakistan and northern India — including Delhi-NCR.
