Ludhua Organic Tea Garden in South Tripura is emerging as a tourism hotspot, attracting hundreds of visitors with boating, kayaking and plans for homestays, trekking routes and other facilities while showcasing the region’s renowned chemical-free organic tea.
Ludhua Organic Tea Garden in South Tripura is fast emerging as a new tourism destination, attracting hundreds of visitors every day following the trial run of boating facilities at the picturesque tea garden on June 17. The tourism project, however, is yet to be formally inaugurated, while several infrastructure and development works are still underway.
According to Tea Garden official Sujit Shil, the proposed tourism destination will be developed under the name “Ludhua Tea Garden Adventure Zone.” The project is expected to offer a combination of nature, adventure and rural tourism, with proposed facilities including homestays, boating and opportunities for visitors to experience the garden’s traditional chemical-free green tea.
If the ongoing development work progresses according to plan, the tourism centre is expected to be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in the coming days.
At present, the tourism project includes three jet boats and two kayaks operating on a nearly two-acre water body located within the tea garden. The boating facilities have already become a major attraction, with the number of visitors reportedly increasing since the trial run began.
Further expansion is also being considered. Plans are reportedly under consideration to introduce a ropeway at the site in the future, which could provide visitors with an additional recreational experience while offering wider views of the surrounding tea garden landscape.
Authorities and local stakeholders are also working to improve the natural appeal of the destination by planting different varieties of fruit-bearing, flowering and medicinal plants. Other visitor facilities, including drinking water, rest areas, modern toilets and trekking routes, are being developed as part of the tourism infrastructure.
The development of Ludhua Tea Garden is linked to a broader tourism plan for Rupaichhari block. The initiative, spearheaded by Rupaichhari Block Development Officer Pritam Debnath, seeks to establish the area as an integrated tourism hub by connecting major attractions such as the Mahamuni Buddhist Temple, Ludhua Tea Garden and Maitri Setu through improved infrastructure and visitor facilities.
Taking inspiration from Kerala’s backwater tourism model, four-seater pedal boats and kayaking facilities have already been introduced at the site. The combination of boating, trekking, tea tourism and the surrounding natural landscape is expected to create a distinctive tourism experience for visitors travelling to South Tripura.
The increasing visitor footfall has generated interest among local residents and tourism enthusiasts, who see Ludhua Tea Garden as an emerging destination with the potential to create new opportunities for the region’s tourism economy.
Apart from its tourism potential, Ludhua is also known for its tea production. Spread across approximately 1,252.85 acres, Ludhua Tea Garden produces organic black and green tea through a chemical-free cultivation process. Organic manure and bio-pesticides are used in tea cultivation, contributing to the garden’s reputation for producing high-quality organic tea.
The tea produced at Ludhua has also gained recognition in international markets. According to sources, with the support of two Kolkata-based companies, tea from the garden is being exported to markets in the Middle East, Europe and Southeast Asia.
