India’s Lok Sabha defeats no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla after marathon debate. Opposition allegations of bias clash with strong defence from government leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, triggering intense parliamentary drama and political confrontation.
A dramatic political showdown unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as the no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla was decisively defeated through a voice vote after more than 13 hours of intense debate and heated exchanges between the ruling coalition and the Opposition.
The motion, introduced by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, accused the Speaker of showing “partisan behaviour” and failing to maintain the neutrality traditionally associated with the office. However, the ruling government strongly rejected the accusations, defending Birla’s conduct and emphasizing the sanctity of the Speaker’s chair in India’s parliamentary system.
The voting was conducted by officiating Speaker Jagdambika Pal, who presided over the proceedings while Birla stepped aside from the Chair during the debate—a move that many government leaders described as a new parliamentary precedent.
Marathon Debate and Chaotic Scenes
The debate on the no-confidence motion began a day earlier and lasted more than 13 hours, turning into one of the most contentious parliamentary discussions in recent months. The Opposition benches repeatedly accused Birla of favouring the ruling alliance during proceedings, while government members countered that the allegations were politically motivated.
Chaos erupted in the Lok Sabha when Home Minister Amit Shah responded to the Opposition’s accusations. His sharp remarks triggered strong protests from Opposition members, who rose from their seats and shouted slogans in the House.
The protests intensified particularly after Shah criticized the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. Opposition MPs were visibly angered by Shah’s remarks and created a ruckus, forcing repeated interventions from the Chair.
Despite the uproar, Jagdambika Pal eventually conducted the voice vote, which saw the motion defeated amid loud protests from Opposition members.
Government’s Strong Defence of Speaker
During the debate, Amit Shah mounted a vigorous defence of Om Birla, asserting that the Speaker’s office is a sacred constitutional position that must remain above partisan politics.
He pointed out that historically, Speakers have faced similar motions, but such attempts often reflected political disagreements rather than genuine concerns about impartiality.
Shah also accused the Opposition of double standards, recalling that during earlier Congress-led governments, parties such as the Samajwadi Party and communist parties had brought similar motions against the Speaker.
According to Shah, those parties—now allies of the Congress—had previously questioned the Speaker’s conduct but were now adopting a different stance for political convenience.
“The Speaker’s chair is sacrosanct,” Shah said, emphasizing that rulings from the Speaker carry constitutional authority and cannot easily be challenged.
Attack on Rahul Gandhi’s Parliamentary Participation
The Home Minister also launched a direct political attack on Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of frequently traveling abroad during important parliamentary sessions.
Shah questioned Gandhi’s absence during crucial debates on national issues, including the Union Budget and the Women’s Reservation Bill.
“When sessions come, he plans foreign trips. Will he speak here from abroad?” Shah asked, drawing loud reactions from both sides of the House.
The remark further intensified the confrontation between the treasury benches and the Opposition.
Opposition’s Argument: Protecting Parliamentary Dignity
The debate was initiated by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who argued that the motion was not a personal attack against Om Birla but an attempt to safeguard the dignity and neutrality of Parliament.
Gogoi said the Opposition believed that the Speaker must act strictly above political affiliations and ensure equal treatment for all members of the House.
However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly rejected those claims, asserting that Birla had consistently maintained balance and fairness while conducting parliamentary proceedings.
Rijiju described the allegations as “baseless” and insisted that the Speaker had followed parliamentary rules while managing often chaotic sessions.
Political Embarrassment for Opposition
The defeat of the motion is widely viewed as a political setback for the Opposition bloc, which had hoped to use the debate to highlight what it called the government’s “high-handedness” in parliamentary functioning.
Instead, government leaders used the debate to highlight what they described as the Opposition’s own shortcomings and inconsistencies.
With 118 Opposition MPs supporting the motion, the move had initially signaled a coordinated challenge to the Speaker’s conduct. However, the final outcome reinforced the numerical strength of the ruling alliance in the Lok Sabha.
The episode also highlighted the increasingly confrontational atmosphere in India’s Parliament, where political disagreements frequently erupt into dramatic exchanges on the House floor.
Despite the heated rhetoric, the defeat of the motion ensures that Om Birla continues as Speaker without any formal challenge to his authority, reaffirming the ruling coalition’s dominance in parliamentary proceedings.
