The Left-Congress (Bamgress) alliance in North Tripura’s Kadamtala Block suffers a major setback as a no-confidence motion unseats CPM’s Reba Das from Rajnagar Gram Panchayat. The political balance now shifts amid changing local equations.

The Left-Congress alliance, popularly known as Bamgress, has suffered yet another political jolt in North Tripura’s Kadamtala Block after losing control over the Rajnagar Gram Panchayat (GP). A no-confidence motion passed against the ruling body led to the ouster of Panchayat Pradhan Reba Das, marking the second consecutive setback for the alliance in recent weeks.

The political turmoil comes close on the heels of the Bamgress’s defeat in Kalagangerpar Gram Panchayat, exposing growing instability within the opposition alliance at the grassroots level in Tripura’s northern region.

No-Confidence Motion Unseats Reba Das

The no-confidence motion against Rajnagar Panchayat Pradhan Reba Das was officially submitted to the District Panchayat Officer on October 9. Acting swiftly, the district authorities organized a special meeting and vote on Monday afternoon at the Rajnagar Gram Panchayat office. The proceedings were held under the supervision of Presiding Officer Kajal Das, ensuring a transparent voting process.

According to the official vote count, Reba Das managed to secure only two votes in her favor, while nine members voted against her, resulting in her immediate removal from the post. The Panchayat consists of a total of 11 seats, making the anti-Pradhan votes an overwhelming majority.

Changing Local Equations and Political Realignment

In the last three-tier Panchayat elections, CPM won two seats, Congress four, and BJP five in the Rajnagar Gram Panchayat. Following the results, the CPM and Congress had formed a post-poll alliance to keep the BJP out of power, creating the Left-Congress (Bamgress) coalition.

Under the alliance arrangement, Reba Das from CPM was elected as the Panchayat Pradhan, while Kabir Hossain from Congress became the Upa Pradhan. Initially, this partnership managed to establish administrative control, but internal friction and shifting loyalties soon began to weaken the alliance’s foundation.

Political insiders revealed that in recent months, some Congress members started aligning with BJP representatives, citing dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Panchayat administration under the CPM leadership. The growing tension culminated in the joint no-confidence motion moved by both BJP and Congress members against the CPM-led Pradhan.

Administrative Formalities and Future of the Panchayat

After the voting, Presiding Officer Kajal Das confirmed that all related documents and reports have been submitted to the District Panchayat Officer, who will issue formal directions regarding the reconstitution of the Rajnagar Gram Panchayat.

Sources suggest that until a new Pradhan is elected, the Panchayat’s administrative work will continue under interim supervision. The upcoming decision from the district authorities is expected to determine which political camp gains control over the local governance structure.

A Blow to the Bamgress Stronghold

This latest loss marks a significant political setback for the Left-Congress alliance, which had been trying to consolidate its influence in Tripura’s rural areas amid the growing dominance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.

Political observers described the development as “a major blow” to the Bamgress in Kadamtala Block, indicating an erosion of its grassroots strength. They further suggested that the trend could signal a shift in local political allegiances ahead of future Panchayat and Assembly elections.

A local political analyst commented, “The Rajnagar episode is not an isolated case. It reflects how the internal contradictions within the alliance are gradually benefiting the BJP. The Bamgress is struggling to maintain cohesion among its members at the Panchayat level.”

The Road Ahead

While the BJP has not yet officially claimed administrative control over the Rajnagar Gram Panchayat, the support it received from sections of Congress members during the no-confidence motion clearly indicates a realignment of political forces.

As the Kadamtala Block witnesses a steady decline in Bamgress influence, the political scenario in North Tripura remains fluid. The next few weeks will be crucial to see whether the Left-Congress alliance can regroup and regain stability or if the BJP will further expand its foothold in the region.

The loss of Rajnagar Gram Panchayat, following the earlier setback in Kalagangerpar, underlines a growing pattern of political volatility in Tripura’s local governance landscape—one that could reshape the state’s rural power dynamics in the coming months.
