Six senior Congress leaders met with Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Thursday, to request his immediate action to ‘restore law and order’ in the state. The delegation included Lok Sabha MPs Tariq Anwar and Gourav Gogoi, TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha, AICC In-charge for Tripura Girish Chodnakar, AICC Secretary Szarita Laitphlang, and Congress MLA and CWC permanent invitee member Sudip Roy Barman.
After the meeting, MP Gourav Gogoi spoke to reporters, expressing grave concern over the current situation in Tripura, where he claimed law and order had completely collapsed and democracy was at stake. He called for the Governor’s urgent attention to the Gandacherra incident and the widespread violence allegedly perpetrated by the ruling BJP ahead of the Panchayat elections. Gogoi warned that if the situation is not addressed seriously, Tripura could soon face a crisis similar to that in Manipur.
The Congress leaders requested the Governor to initiate a thorough investigation into the Gandacherra incident, which involved the death of a young man in a group attack, and to ensure justice for his family and all those who lost their livelihoods and homes. Gogoi also highlighted the attack on Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman in Tepania, urging the Governor to uphold the democratic values promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
MP Tariq Anwar expressed his frustration with the Tripura government and police administration, stating that the delegation had turned to the Governor as a last resort. The leaders reported that the Governor assured them he would look into the matter and take the necessary action.
